Can anyone shed some light on...

Postby a.beck » Sun Aug 09, 2015 3:45 pm

This thing:
AWA thing.jpg

AWA 50 watt amplifier model PA 1002

It's got a couple mic inputs, but I have no idea what they sound like. The thing powers up and will pass signal - the speaker on the front even works - but I'd be interested to know if it's worth turning it into a mic preamp pair for studio use.

Any info appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi Andrew,

probably not worth using as a recording preamp, might make an ok guitar amp without too much trouble.

There is a bit of info here:
http://www.ozvalveamps.org/awa.htm

you might be able to get in touch with other owners. As it's built as a PA I would not expect pristine valve mic pre performance, and there are other options out there for valve mic pre amps. If you really want to know though, give Rob a call

Yeah, that's more or less what I would have guessed, thanks guys. Just figured it couldn't hurt to ask in case there was some secret groovy sauce in there!

Cheers.

Yes, I have had a number of these type of old valve PA jobs as my guitar amps. The first was in 68 and came from the Catholic church in Hamilton. It was a really old 1940's PA amp and not great on clean sounds like the fenders that the rich kids had..........who wanted clean anyway? :D Next in 72 was a British Quad DIY with KT66's built by a tech from Melbourne Uni. I call it old grizzly and it had a great sound. I still have that one.... the oldest amp i own. I aslo have an old STC amp sitting in the shed. I probably should flog it off to someone who would do something with it.
Like chris T and Dave say, set your AWA up as a guitar amp and you will have a versatile bit of kit that will have a lot of use as an option in your studio.
