Multiple shotguns to record dialogue

Postby Manning » Fri Feb 12, 2016 1:33 pm

So I'm trying to master (OK... become "adequately competent") at broadcast audio. I've acquired an impressive array of Lavs and headsets as a result.

My problem is I am trying to combine on-set dialog (recorded with any of the above) with puppet dialog (recorded in a booth through a Blue Bottle/Avalon 737). The difference in quality is driving me utterly insane. I am resorting to ADR as a result (tedious and time-consuming).

I can get good location sound with a shotgun. However the actor has two positions: facing the camera and facing a puppet, and one shotgun can't catch it all without axis problems.

Someone was telling me there is a technique of setting up two shotguns at different angles and magically not getting any phase problems. But I certainly haven't figured it out.

Anyone know how to approach this?

Hey manning,

You could use an omni lapel mic on the talent at the shoot.
And in the booth you can use the same omni lapel for easier sound matching.
Also try the shotgun instead of the Blue mic in the booth.
If I understand issue correctly.

Yeah, I don't want to downgrade the quality that far.

I've tried omni lapels (good ones, not cheap rubbish) - but we have elaborate costumes and there is way too much costume noise. (Not from mic abrasion, the costumes are just noisy).

I've tried headsets, but the quality of the tiny transducer just isn't good enough. (Caveat: I haven't yet tried something of a DPA d:fine standard.)

If I can get good on-set sound from multiple shotguns, then also recording the puppets on the shotgun is a good idea. But I have to get that far first.

I think that's why boom swingers exist..
I'd just set each shotgun to be on axis for one each of the talent facing directions then just chequerboard the
audio from the 2 mics to match the shot.
Make sure you get some room tone and use which ever mic has the dominant tone for your fill track.

definitely try using the same mic in the studio for those recordings.
that will help with the match up no end!
