Drum Overhead mic boom arms built to hang from ceiling

Postby Dave77 » Sat Feb 13, 2016 3:10 pm

Thinking of attaching some sort of mic boom arm system to my ceiling, anyone got any kind of system like this ?
I have a fairly low ceiling and a fairly tight space and I'm thinking of running a bar across the ceiling where the drums are usually situated, then having 2 or more booms attached to the bar..
This will clear a bit of floor space and I'll just keep my two go to overhead choices up on the stands semi permanently..

Hanging some sort of bar or fixing is easy enough but finding appropriate heavy duty boom arms isn't easy,
Particularly if it's to hold fairly heavy Mics..
I want them to be safe and I also want them to stay where they are meant to be when I put the mic in the position I want, not some half arsed boom that sags half an hour after its put in place.
Currently I have latch lake mic King stands so something that can be attached to the ceiling but is equally heavy duty would be fantastic...
Anyone across this with any sensible approach or solution???
Any ideas or links would be greatly appreciated ..

Thank you,

Dave

Hey thanks AJ,
that looks like the kind of thing I'm looking for, thank tou very much.
Still keen to hear any personal experience of anyone trying this in their studio,
I believe one Melbourne studio at least has this concept going

i put in a system like this for a studio in LA, worked out really well.
used just basic black plumbing pipe which looked good and was super sturdy.
used triad orbit clamps and stands and hung coles and RCA's off it easily, held in place like a dream.

Thanks Sean that's great to hear,
I'm usually hanging Coles or a u87 pair above the kit,
I'd live to see some pics of this done ...
I'll inbox you my email, if you have any photos or a link to the studio, i would love to see it

We use the Manfrotto Magic Arms to hang broadcast mics all the time.
A heavy duty clamp at one end, and a 3/8" thread spigot at the mic end will hold up anything you want.

Thanks Al,
That looks great,
I ended up going with the triad-orbit as suggested by Sean and AJ.
I've have them up in the next day or so and I'll post some pics to help out anyone else who may be inclined to do the same concept..

Cheers

I have the traid orbit stuff
Its great but i so wonder about it , for the price you pay
I wonder if it could be one level more industrial .
Heavy mics still droop if you dont super tighten !
