Who invented gated reverb?

Postby Chinagraf » Fri Apr 08, 2016 7:50 pm

Not the effects unit, the keyed gating of room mics.I heard an old Bowie song today on the radio they were playing because Dennis Davis one of his drummers had died. Had to be 70's some time, way before that Hugh Padgam stuff.Got me wondering..... who was the first man to patch them through probably a kepex and say ooh I like that, one day bands with long hair will use this excessively...

On a related note, wasn't it Visconti who came up with idea of recording Bowie's vocals with three mics, two of them gated, for "Heroes"? As he sings louder, the gates open and add more room sound. Brilliant!

Yes, the track I heard was most likely Visconti production.
2nd verse of Heroes was about him and the young chick he was seeing during the album in Berlin. Bowie saw them kissing out of the studio window...

My research is suggesting gated reverb was accidentally discovered by Peter Gabriel when some drums were being tuned in the studio and some gates happened to be left on a couple of channel that an AMS rev was patched into.

I thought the Peter Gabriel drum sound was captured via the SSL studio listen mic and compressor that follows. This was later refined with keyed gates, compression and non linear reverbs.

Visconti did gating on drums sometimes followed by delay and pitch change feeding back on each other. The Bowie album Low has a lot of that sound.

Yeah Jason I thought that as well. Then they had a tech spend the night wiring it up so they could patch through the listen mic compressor.

And funnily enough Eventide has just released a plugin that does exactly that! Called the T Verb, aptly named
