studio madness

Postby mylesgm » Wed Nov 04, 2015 1:53 pm

In spite of all the advice I started building a studio...
Mudbrick live room 6.5x7 and 3m high, all 30 tons laid by us. An existing container studio and a further 2 production rooms.
Don't tell me what I'm doing wrong, just laugh to yourself!

I'm not laughing, I'm in the midst of building a studio, too, we must be cracked.

Still it looks like you are well on the way, good luck with it.

Of course there is money to be made in studios, isn't there?

Looks great Myles. Like Bob, I'm building too. I'll buy whoever finishes first a beer - if I can still afford one then LOL. I just mounted a 2.7m x 1.2 control rom window into the wall and then realised I still needed to access the wall section for further treatment, so had to 'dismount' the window again. Fortunately it hadn't yet been sealed in! Hope it all goes well for you.

Cheers

I keep promising my wife that it will be 'finished by Christmas', as she wants my 'junk' out of her office. Unfortunately, another Christmas will soon slide by and it still won't be complete. Maybe the next Christmas. /:)

2.7 meters must be the correct size for a control room window, that's what mine is too, though only 800mm high.

Hi Steve, (and anyone else that's has taken on the daunting and wallet emptying process of building a studio!)

a little bit of advice from someone that's built dozens of studios... the windows and doors are just about the last thing you install.

If you're designing a studio it is advantageous to design it in such a way that the windows and doors are installed at the end of the installation.

Why???... well there are plenty of reasons but you only need one... none the less, here's 5.

1: The most obvious is you're not going stick a 4x2 beam or a flying tool thru the glass, if it's not there!
So there's less chance of breaking or scratching the glass.

2: A 2700 x 1200 opening between 2 rooms is an absolute bonus during the consruction stage and laying in the wiring looms. It allows manouvering of large panels or beams from one room to another or passing tools from one room to another and it allows easy communication between rooms.

3: Better airflow during the construction stage as the aircon usually isn't operational at that point and shouldn't be, unless you want to clog it up with dust.

4: When you install the glass you want to do that in a dust free environment.

5: It's much easier to load thru doorways that don't have a door hung on them and less chance of damaging the door or the seals. A door just gets in the way during the construction process.
If you must... hang the door, fit the hardware, then remove the door. When everything else is finished re-hang the door and then fit the door seals. That way you minimise damage.

OK, now let's say you have a pre-built 2700 x 1200 window, that due to it's size and maybe the corridor width has to be loaded into the room before a wall can be installed. Then load it into the room, find some floorspace where it's out of the way and encase it so it doesn't get damaged.

If I were you Steve, I'd leave that window out until the room is closer to completion.

Hope this helps.

Another pro-tip.

If some three years later you decide to replace your door, try to remember whether you properly sealed your sand-filled walls or not.

In our case, the answer was a resounding "no". :))

Thanks for the tips Greg. Yes, the window is pre-built and already fully framed (440mm front-to-back), came out of an ex-ABC studio rip out. The reason for putting it in now is that it is just simply too big for me to install easily on my own once the wall is built, so the wall is being built around it after being fork-lifted onto a pre-built wall base! The window is 2.7m x 1.12m inclusive of framing (not 1.2m, mis-typed).

Actually, the glass will need to be removed to renew the seals and give the interior a good clean, so I will remove the two glass panels while the window unit is currently on the floor (been unmounted since the pic below), and store them safely away until much later in the build. It will be much easier to just work with the empty frame for the time being and, as you say, that big opening will be very useful!

And a little more... Here's our 1938 Steinway 7 foot grand. Originally delivered to the TSO as their concert piano it now continues life with us. Edging closer to finishing but my madness is also edging closer...

Myles,

That mud brick construction looks awesome. It's hard to really know from a pic but it looks like the vibe in there will be great - something lacking in many studios. Keep us posted.

Ooooh yeah. I definitely need to find a moment to come in... Heh. I just realised I'm wearing my work shoes that still have the mudbrick dust from this build.
