Creating your own drum samples

Postby Zarven Kara » Sat May 07, 2016 4:00 pm

Has anyone ever made there own drum samples? Just wondering the easiest way to record an acoustic drum sound and then be able to trigger it. Im using cubase 7.

Have a look at Slate Trigger. It comes with an instrument maker for creating your own multi velocity layer samples.
Then you just use it as an insert over any percussive sound to trigger it. i used to grab say 5 velocity level hits from the drummer on snare and kick at the end of a session. I like to actually record on all mics when doing this, then you can have things like the overheads as a sample well, room mics as well etc. With trigger you can load several instruments at once and mix them all together.

The other option is a software sampler triggered via midi, make up patches from your recording.

Yeah that sounds brilliant. Whats the best one to get? The slate trigger 2 EX?

Yes, I do this everyday using Maschine - very easy to catch things, trim them up, adjust their ADSR, add fx etc.
Might be a little heavy-duty if you're just doing bits and pieces there, but the Mikro controllers can be picked up with software for around $200 if you keep your ear to the ground

Hi Zarven, I have Platinum, but I think the only difference is the amount of Samples the plugin comes with.

Hey Andy, yes I think EX will do the job, but have actually figured it out, you can just drag you wav samples onto Groove agent one in cubase which will do the drum replacing or overlapping just fine. No slate sound but I want to use the sound form my studio anyway. Keeps the realists happy.....
