Noisey Capsule, base OK.

Postby chribble » Mon Jul 18, 2016 11:13 am

Hey y'all.

What's the remedy for a noisey capsule? It sounds like there is a wind (not gentle breeze) going through it at all times.

It's an Oktava 012 capule on a modded base and The base is OK as have tested with 104 capsule.

Would it cost about as much to replace as to service? i.e. $80-$100?

Cool!

Lot of people more experienced than me here.. but to me sounds like moisture on the capsule...

Place it under a lamp that generates heat for a while...

cheers

The easiest way to get rid of condensation is to dump it in a bucket of water. Don't dump it in a bucket of water though... but it is how the transistor was invented. A nice bit of cognitive dissonance for your Monday morning.

Walter Brattain! Nobel prize winner along with two of his colleagues at Bell Labs for the discovery of the transistor effect. In 1947 his experiments were being messed with as a result of condensation forming on the outside of his prototype transistor. Common convention would suggest that he should have stuck it inside a vacuum then run the experiment again... but he thought that would take too long.

Instead he dunked it in a thermos of water and voila! Here we are. How immersing something in water protects it from water is beyond me. Serendipity is a wonderful thing.

An update.

This actually worked. Heated the oven to about 60 degrees. Turned it off. Waited about 20 minutes.
Left capsule in with the heat off, fan on, for about an hour and its working perfectly normal again.

Cheers
