sub crossover

Postby jkhuri44 » Tue Oct 04, 2016 12:12 pm

Hi all,

I am looking in the next few months to build a DIY 12" sub for my home studio.

It will be a passive speaker with a rack amp. The amp does not have a crossover filter.
Can anyone shed some light on some off the shelf solutiions??
i know of a few DIy projects which will do this for me. but if there is something affordable and ready made as well as being decent quality, i'd probably prefer that :)

i've seen something by rolls music, but reviews aren't great....

Hi,

A few options, though hardly a definitive list:

Hypex make both DSP modules and Plate amps for subs which could do the job, with or without amplification. These projects remain in the DIY realm, but at the very simplest end of it wherein you are largely just casing up a fully fab'd pcb and connecting a PSU and I/O. I have built amplifiers using both the UcD and Ncore modules, and used the PSC2.700 plate amp.

A cheap alternative would be to find a used BSS crossover on the 2nd hand market (ebay, gumtree, usual suspects). Such as the FDS 310. Downsides of such units, presuming they are in good nick, is reduced choice of filter type/slope (or none, BSS unit is fixed 24dB/oct LR), and lack of other more sophisticated tools for alignment/tuning (ie delay, eq, all pass filters, FIR). I have seen some of these recently for humorously low prices.

Best,

The advantage of using Hypex DSP Xover for sub is huge and well worth the cost.
Of paramount importance is integration with main speakers and with dsp you
have flexibility to modify many parameters (slope / phase etc) to get the sub
doing what it should without getting in the way of the mains.

Another option is Minidsp, I believe they do both xover and plate amps.

When thinking about subs for my duntech speakers i decided to look at the used market till I could get powered duntech subs built to suit my speakers as I couldn't really sort out all the design issues myself
Not a bad article on the subject on the Duntech site might be worth a read.
