sony mpx / mci channel strips? worth racking up?

Postby harry » Sun Jul 17, 2005 5:53 pm

hi guys,

i was wondering if anybody has any comments on the sound of
the sony mpx / mci style mic pre and eq's

i have the chance to trade an unwanted effects processor for a pair of these from an mate who never got around to racking them up.

apparently they are from a sony / mci but i dont know which one..
maybe jh600 or mpx3036?

i dont think they would be too hard to rack, ive done it with other channel strips (and no schematics b4)

maybe i should seek treatment for my illness?

been resisting the urge to comment, as i don't have first hand experience with these sony desks.... but we did nearly buy one so i've done a lot of research, and anyone who's used them will tell you how character-less they are. in fact the idea is that you buy these desks, then rip out all the pres and eqs and replace them with forsells, hardys, avalons etc. so i can't imagine they'd be worth racking up... but hey, if they were real cheap, and you like the sound (or lack thereof), go for it. and i'm not sure this applies if they are from an older MCI.

there at least a couple of 3036 owners on this forum, i thought they would've commented by now?

just my 2 cents worth, if that.

Thanks guys,

i dont think ill go to the trouble if they are 'bland sounding'

it made sense with the dynamix 3000 because the eq is so violent, like a filter box really.

by the way, i dont have the desk anymore but i have the schematics on pdf, i remember someone on the forum ?henry? was after these?

Thanks Harry, Yeah I have the schematics now from another friend of mine who gave me some mods from Jensen circuits which improve the input gain dramatically. Let me know if your interested?

thanks Henry,

i have given the console to a friend who has the room for it....32/16 matches his 16 track tape machine soooo well, oh well...

but, im sure he would be interested in making it spiffy, so i would appreciate those details...

The MCI JH-600 and Sony MPX-3000 are different with different front ends. It's a bit funny that you don't know which you have. The MPX-3000s I've seen have a creamy paint finish.
