Drum Tracking Rooms in Melbourne.

Postby Simon B » Tue Apr 25, 2017 9:45 am

With Sing Sing closing up I am wondering where people are going to track drums now.
Hello my name is Simon Bray and I like guitar amps, currently at 20 something.

Are there many with a big room, Neves and Neumanns?

I've got room and neumanns and there are plenty of others too just like there always have been in melbourne. There are even rooms, neves and neumanns too.

Hi Simon, so back to your actual question, is there something you are looking for that you can't get at Pony (which I assume is where you work as it's website is listed under your name)?
Cheers,
Paul

I moved to NSW 12 months ago, I had honestly forgot about the pony link and was genuinely interested in where people that went to the main sing sing building were now going.

I like knowing where people record. I like knowing studios in Melbourne and over Australia. Is there some line I have crossed? Something I have done wrong? I am finding peoples responses quite patronsing and condescending and I do not know why.

Didn't mean to be patronising... I guess there's a little underlying push back from me about Sing Sing because I've had a number of conversations that run along the lines of "Oh no, what are we going to do now that Sing Sing is closing...?" from both musicians and other producers which has pissed me off because there are so many excellent studios in melbourne which make great records week in week out both with and without expensive gear, in big rooms, small rooms, untreated rooms and houses. That's no disparagement about Sing Sing itself just attitudes that seem to permeate the scene which are often elitist and seemingly poorly informed. It has always been the people who make records that count, not the gear or the rooms. They can help of course but they can also hinder.

Furstock has the neve/ neuman thing going but these others are all options, Oaklands, Black Pearl, Dex, The Mill......
on and on .... as well as Myles studio, the studio out back of Frankston where I do some work etc etc and now those pesky Tesky Bros are doing some nice things at their home studio. I know there are many others that are working as well, maybe not with neve's but while neve is great you wouldn't be missing out on anything with the other great gear options including Optro ;) the whole neve thing can be gear snobery but if that's on the wish list, there are quite a few options in and around Melbourne.
Also to clarify, Sing Sing at Gordon St Richmond is closing in June but Sing Sing South will remain open.

I'm not attempting to be patronizing in my response either Simon,

Myles (and Chris) have said pretty much what I am thinking...
There are many rooms, plenty of Neve modules (who needs a whole desk?) Api's, Quadeights, and lots of other great pre's for drums, Neumanns etc, and many great sounding drum recordings happening.

Neve preamps & Neumanns - is not the ultimate drum sound at all IMO.
Give me some API's, Quadeights, Ameks, Chandlers, Electrodynes (yes Chris - Optro's) etc - and then give me some great mics - ribbons, Dynamics, lots of really great condensors - there are SO many great non-Neumann choices out there!

SingSing was great - but I've heard (and mixed) some pretty boring/average sounding drum recordings done there.

I hear the same thing in Sydney - now that 301 is closing...... and its exactly the same story

Hi Simon, I wasn't trying to be patronising or surly either.
Truly great dedicated recording rooms ARE hard to find, but not always necessary.

Simon is still loved and missed here at Pony Music. He is back often, but but enough.

Its great to know who else is out there, what they have and what they do.

Another question, is there a Studio Listing somewhere that we can all list who we are and what we have?

Since Dave McCluney can't get back on the forum for some reason (?), I'll do a quick spruik for him...

The new Atlantis in Tottenham sounds really, really good - the tracking room has a 3+ metre ceiling and the MCI-500 sounds absolutely huge. One of the best drum tracking consoles ever I reckon.

Doesn't hurt that Dave has made more records than any of us ever will.

Yes indeed, Dave's place is pretty cool and I'm so keen to get some time on that MCI. As always though, it's the people inside that studio that make it special and Dave is pretty special!

Dave has put an enormous amount of time into that console - consider it well and truly serviced.
