Just a reminder to keep it simple, stupid.

I spent 12 hours yesterday going over the console I have in storage. Cleaning, cleaning, testing, cleaning... testing. For some reason the master channel wasn't working properly. It passed audio but to hear it I had to dime the control room level, the master fader and input channel gain. It was almost as though I was hearing only the crosstalk in the desk. Routing the aux's worked, bypassing the master fader and sending signal straight to the control room section worked.

I tried everything, and narrowed it down to the mix amplifiers. So, after working on some input channels I cracked out the scope, meter and schems and started fault finding in the most awkward position. 5 hours later, still scratching my head I moved onto something else. I pulled up the TT patchbay to reposition a ribbon cable when I noticed that two ribbons were mixed up... The master fader was plugged into the auxillary section of the patchbay.

D'oh. The inserts on the master fader weren't normalized, so they didn't pass audio at all. Least it all works now. Very nicely too, might I add.

I did something similar when I recapped the master section on my console. Quite a few caps in total, 6 pcb, thru pcb connectors, ribbon cables etc. Took photos so I knew how it went back together. Put it back in the console, powered up, no sound. I thought to myslef "F&^% no, I've screwed something, but I was so careful". Looked at the patchbay and had a comp patched over the front stereo insert. And it wasn't turned on.
I smiled after that.
