Bang for Buck Mic Kit

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to put together a value for money microphone kit.
I'd like to keep the limit to $1000, and try to include around 4 to 5
mics that are "cheap but suprisingly good".
These mics will need to be some what versitile, to be used on a number
of instruments. So please tell me your thoughts.

Avenson Audio....do a stereo pair of condensor mics for 500 or 550..some people rave about em...

u can use those with acoustic instruments, drum overheads, etc...they are very "Real" sounding...appaerently...never heard em...

add a D112...and a few 57's....or maybe snatch up some 421's on ebay..etc

and there u have enough for most drum kits, guitar cabs...vocals (421...not the best choice...but hey...1000 isnt much), bass...and random instruments...

A few 57's, a couple of cheapie SDC's and a cheapie LDC? May even have enough left to get a no-name ribbon, if you don't buy it in Australia ;)

A pair of CAD M179 - really nice mic for little outlay..

I've been happy with my pair of Oktava MC012's as OH's, can be found fairly cheap on evilbay

Thanks all so far. I should have said in my original post that this value for money mic kit is
potentially a beginners kit for uni students. I have a friend who asked me to try and come up with
a package that will cover bases for around the $1000 mark. So I'm assuming i need to find the right
mics and then approach the importers etc....which leaves the second hand market out of the question really.

Barney, those KEL's could be good for it. It all depends how they behave in a live environment.

Tim, I'll check out the CAD.

So please keep the ideas coming.

and then just buy some chinese LDC for over heads, but not the C1, I could never get it to sound good on overheads so dont stress tim, how is it treating you?

Its fine. I've used it a few times but I'm waiting to hear the group buy in mics that I got too.
I definately is different to my original C1 I bought in 2003/2004 - its brighter than the one I used to have (sold it to a mate who wanted a cheapish allrounder)

we've been selling a bunch of these Legacy AXIS70 Ribbon mics lately - we got them in as a sample to try in our studio and we've been recommending them to everyone who wants a decent cheap mic, this thing sounds damn good for the price.. great on guitar, hats etc.. (I've actually been using it more than our AEA!!).. was a review in AT mag last issue also!

Those AXIS ones (that you see in AT) are pretty much the same as the ribbons that are coming out of that group buy over at Homerecording.com
If they are good, then fabulous!! Would be interesting to hear one..

Wow Geoff. interesting thats for sure. There are some goos cheap ribbons out there. I just picked up a stereo ribbon that has no brand on it but looks very royer-ish also. And sounds really great.
