Not trying to be a bastard, but why didn't you check compatability before upgrading???? Once my machine is working I don't upgrade anything without Avid/Digi say so. Not when bread and butter is on the line.

Sorry Tim for my ignorance but are you using PC or Mac. Try setting up a new user on your computer if your OS is corrupted , well this works with a Mac not too sure with a PC.
I'm a bit fearful of PT 8 at this stage. For me to go to PT 8 HD I need to upgrade my Mac OS to Leopard, pay $440 for the PT upgrade and upgrade all my plugins (some cases pay for the plugin upgrade). All up $1k for the move so PT 7.4 is looking good.

I havent been on GS or the DUC for some time - too busy working at the moment.
My PC automatically downloaded IE as part of its windows update overnight.
I was unaware there were issues with PT & IE8 so I would have NOT installed IE8 had I known that.
I think I'll just go for a reformat and clean up the system anyway - need to remove a few programs I dont use anyway..
In regards to checking compatibility PRIOR to upgrades, I would NOT have thought a web browser would affect the compatibility of a DAW - its not like PT functions are is linked with IE!!
I know what you are saying tho Kristian - I'm right in the middle of drum edits, so its a bad time to have to redo the system..
There goes my weekend!!

I feel your pain. The change to Leopard for me was intense. Avid requires very specific parameters to ensure smooth running. I switched off automatic updates at the root level in Mac OS but itunes has it's own auto updater, which caught me out and upgraded quicktime without my knowledge.Quicktime being one of the key components. So far no serious bugs but quite a few unexplained crashes this week.

Guys, thanks for the well wishes (and offer of a Mac nIC), but I'm going to try and rectify the situation doing a Digi recommended removal - remove SP3, remove IE8, reinstall SP3 and reinstall IE7.
Had I known to NOT install IE8, I would never have done so, but holy hell its made a mess of my system.
Anyway, I'll get onto it tonight when kids in bed and I can concentrate without disturbances.
Maybe just have a glass of red for condolences ;-)

Yes you seriously would'nt think a browser update would F@#% a PT setup, especially on PC. Anyway, shit happens, hope the fix works, it should, ummmmmm you'd think???????

I dunno about multiple computers, that sounds like multiple chances for problems - it's certainly a good reason to have a dual boot system, though!

From: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700 comes this.
If IE8 was installed before XP SP3 it can't be removed (need to uninstall SP3 then do it)
If IE8 was installed after SP3 then this should do the trick: Start-Run-%windir%\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe

Well, I managed to remove IE8 - thank goodness.
Just finished my drum edits, so I'm pretty happy..
Will still probably to a reformat at some stage for a tidy up/cean out of the old crap..

Oh shit you were up till near 2am doing it, you had a day full bitch.

yeah, you bet nIC..
I'm not going to upgrade to PT 8 either until some of the other bugs are worked out..
Seems there are a few niggles still with 8 that are being worked on.
I'm pretty happy with 7.4cs9 at the moment.. Does what I need it to do..
However, I am extremely happy as I've just bought a pair of API 512C's to add to my lunchbox!! :=) :=)

Well Tim I just couldn't help myself could I, just went out and did the upgrade to PTHD 8, with a Apple OS Leopard, plugin and ram upgrade as well. Took me 7 hrs last night to get everything running right and $1k bill just to add to the joy to say " yes I have the latest PT 8 ".
Do I feel that I accomplished anything? " No I don't think I did ". I'm NOT coming here anymore because you all are a bad influence on me and I'm too piss weak to resist temptation.
Pissed off nIC

You need to go and buy your own stress relief. Each to their own as they say.
