Classic LIVE jazz recordings

howdy... looking for some recommended listening in the genre of live jazz recordings. ideally i'd like to check out some classics, and also modern recordings.

sadly it's a genre that i have neglected a little.

Classic 1959- 'Kind of Blue' Miles Davis
or Dave Brubeck or Stan Getz. A bit of Django Reinhardt perhaps?

New/modern jazz - maybe something from 'The Necks'? Wynton Marsalis? Even some of Norah Jones' stuff?? French Jazz scene? maybe Diana Krall.

Live as in live in the room or live gig?

In terms of actual live gig recordings, I like:

Frisell- East/West- two live gigs, one east coast, one west coast. One side is pretty straight, the other is a bit more rocky. One of my favourite records at the moment.

The classics would be:
Miles live at Filmore
Monk Orchestra at Town Hall
Monk Quartet /Coltrane at Carnegie (awesome!)

There's a Kurt Rosenwinkel record from a year or so ago called the Remedy which is a live record at the Vanguard in NYC- one of my favourite players, but not my favourite record. Apparently Kurt mixed it at home, but I think it's interesting as it's pretty modern, and I reckon the volume the band was putting out on stage makes it sound a lot more like a live rock record than a live jazz record- wooly and not that defined.

There's also another Rosenwinkel record from last year called Reflections, which is a studio record, but it's one of my favourite recent records, both for playing and how beautifully it's been recorded.

On the Marsalis thing, House of Tribes is a pretty cool live record. For the studio, Standard time no. 1

At the modern (& vocal) end of things there is Diana Krall's "Live in Paris".

Thanks Al. Well aware of that. It is a live studio recording though. Isn't that what is being asked. Or is it live venue jazz recordings with audience etc..

I thought live live. I still remember the day I opened up a Mingus vinyl to find a note on the sleeve-

paraphrasing, but- "This recording has been made using modern microphones, without the use of any EQ or compression".

Pretty cool! A different time...

thanks for all the suggestions guys. i have quite a lot of these artists cd's but not live gigs.

really digging the variety of responses, especially the artists i've never heard of... will be checking them out for sure! preferably with scotch in hand.

Ok 'Live' with audience live. It's much clearer now.

Clayton Cameron trio - he did a double DVD - one is of the band and the other of tuition for playing with brushes - the band DVD is different to a lot of what is called jazz in that it has great melodies.

Haddouk Trio - French jazz / ethnic band featuring Didier Malherbe on sax/flute - I haven't heard a better sax player than this guy.
