Peak Audio??

Hi all - any thoughts on Peak Audio's (www.peakaudio.com.au) studio power amps? Are they a reliable reference amp for driving passive monitors (the price is very appealing)?

there's a focurite red 5 on ebay at the moment if you're after a power amp...

or if you like, I have a bunch of crown power amps for sale.

I have a 1u peak power amp that puts out about 70 watts a side. Does a good job but this one was dropped (wasn't me) and because of being dropped now has a noisy fan. I don't use it for studio applications so noisyfan is not an issue and can't be bothered getting it fixed.

Recently got a old amcron macrotech amp and the sound of that thing compared to regular amps is brilliant :D . Also recently got one of those class T amp (tripath) boards for home hifi which I wired up into a broken pc smps box which my bro was throwing out (thanks bro). This type of amp is very revealing and I really like listening to it. Its very different to class a or class a/b and may make you rethink your mixes. Anyway I'm rambling. I say go with a s/h crown...or if you do get a peak don't drop it!

Thanks Kris - unfortunately the Crowns are all significantly more than I have available at present. I think I'll go with the Peak as it seems to reproduce what's happening reasonably accurately and should do me for a couple of years till I have a bit more spare $$ and am in a better position to judge what I'm hearing in an amp. I haven't ever had to source an amp for a pair of passive monitors before - an amps either been installed in the studio and previous monitors have been active.

no worries.

these amps are from a sound reinforcement system and might be overkill in a studio anyway.

they were capable of pumping 120 db (at the back) of a 1400 seat auditorium. nice and fat.
