M-Audio BX5a nearfields?

Heya,

There is a cheap pair of these at a second hand shop near work... Anyone know if they are worth a closer look/listen, and if they are generally reliable? Looking for something to do some basic editing/composition with a musician friend (home use) Also have a pair of old JBL 4401's, so finding an amp for those is my other option (the foam surrounds look OK so will hopefully hold out for a while)

Hi Stephen, we have a pair of these here in Swaziland and they are not awful and certainly for songwriting, editing, composition work they are fine. Certainly not classy mixing or post-production speakers but for what you want if they are cheap and in good condition then you'll do fine.

I had a pair of the 8's for many years and they served me well.

Not the greatest speaker ever built but usable.

I auditioned some for a similar purpose many years ago (in a shop with a CD i knew well) and they were terrible in some respects. I ended up with some yamaha msp5's which to me were much more capable. I see them get around quite cheap these days too.

i used to have bx8s and thought they were good at the time. i got dynaudios bx5 and no comparison. maudio is kinda peaky in upper mid which makes it hard to place the vocal imo. butttttt.. good bass response so win/lose.
