Anyone know a banjo player?

Postby Manning » Sun Jul 14, 2013 3:51 pm

I had a guy named Martin Louis lined up for a session, but I haven't been able to get hold of him for two weeks now.

Anyone know a quality bluegrass/Scruggs-style banjo player in Sydney? I've got 5 tracks that are getting a bit urgent.

I just saw one busking outside the Marrickville Metro shopping centre - seemed pretty good! Unfortunately I can't get back there to get contact info.

And now I don't have a banjo player any more - Dave pulled out for some reason.

I can't believe it is this hard to find a banjo player in Sydney. I'll be chasing up Tim's tip (Mark "Bucky" Collins) next.

Just spoke to Mark but he is off to the US shortly and can't fit me in.

Again, thanks for the help anyway.

It's been pretty weird - maybe I've been lucky, but I'm not accustomed to musicians not turning up for *paid* work. I'll see if I can find someone who'll work remotely.

LOL, yeah I spent a year living in Africa back in 2000/2001 (Kenya and Mozambique), so I know what "Africa time" is.

But I'm in Sydney and I'm dealing with people who present themselves as professionals, so it's a little annoying. (Excluding Bucky Collins of course - he was great to deal with... just not available).

I had Blackie from the Hard-ons in the same situation a few months ago - Banjo players dropping out at the last minute. We also had to dump some hopelessly unreliable ones.
Then I had 2 killer players here from the US about 6 weeks ago, which makes me think - surely there are some pro US guys that will do it via online.

There would be so many great banjo players in the US - and reliable (or they don't eat).
The future of session playing is really online.

The problem with online stuff is while they may be fantastic players (verified from Youtube, etc) but that's no guarantee they can make a decent recording. I found one guy online who didn't know what "48K/24bit WAV" meant or what "brand" his microphone was.

Agree - but that guy dont know nuthin!
The guys I had here knew their mic's.
When they saw I was using Beyer 160's, and my Electrodyne's they relaxed and totally trusted me.
The 160 is killer on banjo.
Don't be put off using the net to do a session by one guy's lack of knowledge.

I've got Ian Simpson (Flying Emus, Slim Dusty, Paul Kelly) in here all next week if you want to try it from a distance.
I often record him here (Perth) for stuff over your way.
