API3124/API3124+

Hi all,

Ive got a deposit on an API 3124 at Mixmasters and have only just realised that there is a difference between the 3124 and the 3124+... As far as i can tell the 3124 doesnt have any phase reverse buttons and the faceplate is a bit different. Do the two sound any different? Any other differences anyone else is aware of? The fact that it doesnt have phase reversal isnt going to stop me buying it but i was just curious.

Yes, the API 3124 is the older version of the API 3124+ it didn't have the polarity switch,
faceplate abit different etc but i'm pretty sure it has the same op amp (API 2520)

May i ask how much you got it for? They have the mixer version also.

Yeah i figured they would both be the same, but just wanted to make sure, got worried for a second that i had missed something...

I got it for $2500 inc GST and postage...

Now i just have to get the rest of the cash together to pay it off!!

Sounds like you are getting some nice gear together - are you a recording musician or engineer/studio owner?

Well by day i work as a "mastering engineer" for a production house in melb. Although im embarrassed to even call myself that since Im only 23 and have barely had any real studio experience let alone mastering... But i do the best i can and try to learn by practicing at every free chance i get...

I also have a home studio where I record my own music as well as local bands, and lately ive been getting a fair bit of work and really want to upgrade my studio hence all the studio purchases...

But the little money i have is quickly disappearing with not much gear to show for it but at least ive learnt my lesson this time round and am buying gear that wont be worth less than the box it was packaged in within 2 years...

Are you an engineer yourself or a recording muscian??

Ohh that sounds cool!

I'm an engineer foremost but play a little (drums/guitar). I've been recording for a couple of years, did a audio course etc.
Very hard to get into any sort of position (assistant/runner) since there not too many "big" studios up here,
but now i'm about 1/2 way through the build of my studio - 2 rooms control/live to base myself out of.

It's worth getting the best gear you can afford now... than you don't have to go a replace all the cheap stuff you got to start with.

in 6 weeks I plan to buy an api or a gml

for roughly the same price I can get 4 channels of api. or a GML channel strip....
or a 2 gml pre's with nothing but the pre.........

i am leaning towards the GML channel strip and then buy a lunch box and just add to it when I can.....

suggestions?

Yeah I did a course at RMIT which was really great for the price compared to SAE or JMC.

It still flaws me how students (or parents) can fork out $10,000 a year and then by the end of the course they know almost nothing, not only that, they just dont seem to have the passion or the inclination to go out and learn for themselves. I know, and have met quite a few students that have come from private institutions that really dont have the skills they should.

Whereas at RMIT it cost me something like $750 and every student and lecturer was passionate about recording music and I learnt a hell of alot. I am probably generalising a bit here but from what i have encountered this seems to hold true most of the time.

It took me almost 1 1/2 years to find a job in the industry, before that i was just doing any work i could get in my home studio which wasnt much.

Building your own studio sounds damn exciting!! Would love to be doing that! Is it based around a console or is it all ITB??

And yeah the Lynx and the API are going to be replacing gear that i bought a little too hastily... Guess you have to learn somehow!

I haven't had the chance to hear to GML, depends on what sort of music you plan on recording (if its rock go for the APIs imo) and what other pres you have, if all are "coloured" pres i'd go for a clean pre. Another one to check out would be Daking, theres a 4 channel unit and a pre/eq strip.

Yeah i agree, all depends on the person - i know some great engineers that have come out of SAE, but i chose a private multimedia college on the coast here and i'm very pleased, i learnt all the basics and now its up to be to put them to practice.

Yeah it is very exciting, not too far away now from completion. It's a bit of both i guess, i have a Ta@#$% M520 with a few outboard pres, thou at the moment the board is purely for tracking.
