Ableton and pro tools/ lynx

hi all
looking like i need to install ableton on my main system for a project

anyone know any issues with co installing on a machine with pro tools?

or any interfacing issues with lynx aurora?

obviously ill back up system first… just thought id reach out for any known data!

ableton and tools seem to exist happily side by side on the machines I'm running - it also plays nice with the aurora but a little gotcha (if you're unfamiliar with the program) is that you may need to activate the various i/o in the preferences or the mixer won't 'see' them, even though you have the correct interface selected.

Like setting the i/o in 'tools, just a bit more convoluted as ableton knows what's there, it just doesn't let you route to everything by default.

I have had Ableton 8 installed on the same machine as HD8, then HD10 & HD11 for quite a while.
No problems, and it has even been playing nicely via rewire.

Its a bit ridiculous that rewiring Ableton to Protools removes the use of VST & AU plugins in Ableton live though.

another weird "note" to anyone else googling this though…

cause ableton "sees" the HD card through core audio - its only an 8io device
thats just what PT HD shows up as
even if you have three cards (so PT you could have 96io) you only get 8 if using that hardware for ableton

really? That seems ridiculous... There a way around it? I've only ever used Ableton with my old LE 8 setup, worked flawlessly, actually put PT to shame in stability sometimes!

not that i could find online..
and like i say - for what i needed to do it was fine so didn't dig too hard.
but from all accounts - PT HD (whatever incarnation of) is seen as an 8io interface by core audio.
just another avid incompatibility!

since the avid media composer/ avid pro tools not being able to be co-installed debacle…. nothing surprises me.

oh and i guess further to that
the installation of ableton was seamless…
quick download. easy install. easy authentication (just a code and and auth file)
no iloks, no registration, no BS.
took less than 30min to have it up and running.

not to say I'm suddenly going to start doing my professional audio projects in it.
just interesting to see how see how (well) some other companies are doing it.

I am a big fan of Ableton. I wouldn't use it for linear recording, but for sound design and generally messing stuff up its great. I would go as far to say that I think it is even better than protools as a creative tool. It is a bit of a shame that it has been wedged so firmly into beat orientated electronic music.

Protools HD coreaudio and asio drivers are indeed ridiculous. Its a legacy from digidesign days. Protools was tied to hardware, and in a lot of ways the hardware was also tied back to protools... at least for HD, by limiting the I/O to just 8 channels.

I don't know about protools HDx, but Protools HD native and its applicable core audio drivers allow you to use the full 64 channels of I/O.
