My Music backup hard drive problems

My W.D. 2 TB My Book Studio Edition II backup music hard drive does not seem to want to power up anymore.
Not a major problem just yet as there is nothing I need to access from there at this point of time.

Just found it is out of warranty.
If the Laptop type supply power supply shows a green light on it I am assuming that it is not the power supply (although I dont have a multi-meter on hand to check this).
So on the External HD. Computer case the LED lights are not showing any power lighting up.
Is this a problem with the casing or a problem with hard drive?

This model consists of 2 x 1Tb hard drives.


Damm Western Digital I see lots of people have had problems with their green hard drives but no-one gives any answers.

Input would be appreciated before I waster another 3-4 hours on this .

There is not a lot you can do here... you could try another power supply if you had one, which you probably don't.

You can crack open the case and have a look see.

Inside these things, is usually an interface board of some kind, which the hard disk plugs into. The interface board functions as the go between between USB/FW/THUND etc and the drive itself, as well as supply power to the drive.

My point being, if the drive fails, sometimes you can replace the drive within the enclosure and be good to go, or buy another enclose if the interface board is rooted.

I just went through this, with two seagate drives...

both died within hours of each other, both had little use, and both were of course back up disks.

After much online searching it seems these seagate barracudas (this particular model) had these sorts of issues..I even went to the trouble of buying a new PCB for the drive and transferring the bios chip to see if I could get it back, I couldn't.

Data recovery services can probably help too - some can read platters - depends if the cost justifies the recovery....
