doncha just love it when you fluke it...

so i spend most days chasing flames and coaxing a performance out of singers and voice over people, fixing broken stuff and doing all the good sound-person jobs (the toilets sparkle!)

in the spirit of sharing the recordings, i thought i'd write it up...

thursday night after work (play) i went down to a gig of a friends to do some live sound work...

this was the combination

acoustic guitar --> quality external preamp stompbox --> mixer
bass --> mixer input
drums --> Roland TD12 --> Roland Amp --> guitar lead into mixer
vocals --> SM Beta 58 into mixer
electric guitar --> line out of a dodgy amp

Mixer: So old the writings rubbed off it, some powered Yamaha gadget (i think!) Typical bar/pub crustyness

Happened to have my shiny new Macbook in my bag, along with an Mbox and two more guitar leads which went from the main out of the mixer to the mbox ---> oops forgot headphones... "those levels look okay i guess!" (i wasn't there to record...)

So i thought - what the hell, i'll record it! And i did... and this is the result, un-mixed... (2.2mb .mp3 160kps)

None of us had rehearsed and this was just a jam song thats not ripping off anybody's stuff so i thought it would be suitable...

Just the one microphone, yes, on lead vox? Having the drums and guitars DI'd really helps with that clean sound and separation. Nice job.

It's always so hit and miss when taking a stereo mix from FOH. The other week I recorded a mix to DAT from FOH at The Annandale and it was great. Last week, same deal but at The Sandringham, and the mix was just all vocals... Guess it depends on the size of the venue and how much stage sound the crowd gets.

Mix can be heard here: http://www.dreamer-productions.com/Clie ... rl_sml.mov
