Pro Tools HD - Multiple devices?

Postby Lee Cardan » Sat May 30, 2015 6:38 pm

I'm running a HD Native card (connected to two Aurora 16s) with HD 10

I also have a Lynx AES16e card connected to two other converters, Weiss ADC1 and DAC1

Can I somehow access both the Weiss converters as well as the regular HD interfaces in a Pro Tools session?

Thanks!

Hey Lee!

Do you need the Lynx AES16e in the system? Or is it in another system?

Protools HD Native supports 64 channels of I/O, both within Protools and via coreaudio/asio. So unless there is any reason for having the AES16e specifically, you could remove it. HD native doesn't support aggregated devices, so you can't combine HD and the AES16e to appear as one interface.

Lynx Aurora 16's can run in 32 channel mode with the LT-HD card. If you put both of the Aurora 16's into 32 channel mode they will appear in Protools as four Avid HD 8x8x8 interfaces which offer 8 analogue and 8 digital I/O each (32 analogue and 32 digital I/O total).

You could then simply connect the Weiss interfaces to your Aurora's via AES.

nath is spot on there
we do the same (but with all auroras)
so each aurora is 16 analogue i/o and 16 digital 1i/o (which has another aurora hanging off it)
it was a hotly discussed topic on another forum at the time - but i believe the outcome was the "correct" way to run the auroras for the most accurate HD mapping is in 32ch mode.
so you are actually doing yourself a favour setting it up this way (and freeing up some gear that you could sell in the form of the AES card and make some D$$$)

hey guys, thanks for the responses
Yeah I've since realised I can't aggregate HD with another device

My problem with running the HD card alone is that when in a session, you can't skmply alt-tab out to iTunes or Spotify for referencing as pro tools seems to hold exclusive usage of the HD interface when it's open.

So while connecting the Weiss's to the Auroras is what I'll do to get them into tools, I'll still keep an AES16e for ability to play non-pro tools music while pro tools is open

If that is the case, it appears you can connect the Weiss ADC & DAC to both the Aurora 16s and the AES16e via AES. It looks like they accept up to 3 AES connections each, and you can then simply choose which connection to monitor through by pressing one of the three buttons on the front panel.

You would need to consider the digital clocking layout though. Perhaps clocking everything to the Auroras.
