Khe Sanh on the radio

Postby Kris » Fri Nov 23, 2007 10:02 am

What have they done to Khe Sanh? I heard it on Triple M this morning and it is not the song I remember, Is there some new re-mix???? It's CRAP!

there are two mixes of Khe Sanh... the original that appeared on 'Cold Chisel' in 1978, and the remix that was on the US version of 'East' (1980). the remix dropped the harp part and i think jimmy re-did the vocal. i think the latter version is the one you hear on the radio most of the time (?) but you will hear both from time to time. i don't know if there is a more recent re-mix.

actually come to think of it i'm not sure if they aren't completely different recordings rather than just remixes... i don't have both at hand to compare. anyone know for sure? it's bugging me now.

No, this one was totally different. Jimmy's vocal was a bit pitchy and not as strong and there was an acoustic guitar picking over the piano intro as well. It sounded familiar but at the same time was all wrong. I have the Best of Chisel album with all the gold coins on the cover.

ummm, i used to play in a virtual cold chisel cover band. which is to say, we were supposedly a 'classic rock' covers band but we played so many chisel songs i may as well have been don walker.

one night we supported one of the real chisel tributes ("Last Stand"?) and couldn't play half our set.

and i do remember listening to both distinct versions way back then.

the worst thing about all this is that is wasn't the early 80s, it wasn't even the late 80s... it was 1992.

and now its 2007, no sooner have you finished playing a song that already feels old (ie matchbox20, oasis) and someone comes and asks for khe sahn... and they aren't older people either... 20 somethings love it!

Well, Jim is a dick for doing that.

Hi Jim, love your music but don't mess with my formulative musical years! Don't dilute the legend. They're my fond memories and I'll thank you to leave them alone.
