My Goldentone is my favorite, hands down. Combined with the strat, the sound compresses so the speaker bursts into action. It only has volume and one tone pot but there is plent of variaty especialy with the Byer as a pre gain stage, you can dial in the amound of overdrive.
Followed closley by my Rex which is better for the overdriven sounds but doesn't do the clean sounds as well as the Goldentone.

I will own a goldenton one day..... they are different sounding amp though...
thanks heaps. I plan on opening a reamp studio. using the amps I mentioned. what amps do you think need to be added to the list I posted in the original post?
JTM 45 and Hiwatt custom classic are on the list. I am up and down about orange amps.... and then it is pretty much all the aussie stuff.

What about Guitar Rig 2...only joking....
I'll second the Golden Tone, I have heard a few recently that sounded amazing. But the Fender Twin gets my vote, I have a Paul Rivera period Twin - 110 watts, channel switching and the Reverb is handy but I find I can pull any sound I need out of it. It's much more versatile than the Marshall I used to own. Hey I'd love to have a few more amps but I'll never part with my Fender Twin.

thanks for the reply
running the small mesa combo through a quad sounds huge. and on full crunch through the quad sounds somewhat similar to a recto
modern metal tones I feel can be done by the bad cat as well as a ledford head and cab I have. it is made in sydney and can do a similar sound to the last tool album. could you maybe give me an example of modern metal tones just so I know what you are talking about and see if it can be done
one thing I would like to do when I have time and any forums members are more then willing to help with this is find the nickleback guitar sound. I read somewhere that it was a vintage marshal and an ac30. I havent tested or proved this but I dont think those tones are mesa's. but I would be very very suprised if it is ac30's and marshalls scooped.
thanks heaps guys

modern metal...
just stuff like Tool (Aenima/lateralus)...or any popular metal acts...nu metal with down tuned guitars and what not.....(as much as i hate the crap)
also any lead playing and solo stuff, with gobs of gain...
thats one facet of the Dual Recto...and it does earlier rock tones great as well...if you use the channels with weaker gain structures, and push the crap out of it :P

Dual Recto - I find I have to EQ the hell out of other rigs but the recto just "sounds like a record"
Roland Jazz Chorus - very unique sound, everytime I hear one I think of the first band I tracked that used one for all rhythm parts...
Those battery powered mini marshalls can be pretty cool too - way better than a telephone band-pass filter....
POD - very generic standard sound but works well as another layer against real amps...

this duel recto is crazy, 4 channel jobby, with 3 voices per channel with 2 fx loops, 2 speaker outs that per channel can have one or the other or both, as well as 4 6l6 and 2 el 34. I am going to put some different el 34's in it though get a bias mod,
stop it Simon!!
jealousy is bad for my health!!!
hahaha
Guitar amps in general are bad for my health,
as a person that seems to like mesa and american type overdriven sounds, I would say you will like this
there is an aussie company at NAMM unveiling an amp that has , 4 channels, 3 voices per channel 4 fx loops power scaling and a whole lot more for less then $4000
http://www.miaudio.com/amps.htm
micheal made me a soldano x 88 clone and the thing absolutly cooks I will be going through nsw in a couple of weeks and we have a stop in sydney to have a listen to it, and a few other aussie amps

Simon,
My CAE 3+ preamp into either a VHT 2:50:2 or Mesa 50/50 power amp into a Marshall 4x12 with Celestion M25's on top and H30's on the bottom.
Does everything for me..
Outboard FX to taste..
Then again, you're aware of my setup these days.. (AGGH)

Is that a drummer taking the piss?
quite humorous though
That is an awesome setup tim,
just going through the webpage now, looks very tempting....
how do you find the VHT? I want to own something VHT when I have more dollars then sense, but purely because of what VHT stands for, and the thing he had printed into a pcb......

Simon,
I actually like the Boogie better than the VHT with the 3+ - its more of a Fender power section (I use matched 6L6GC's) rather than the EL34 (which I find to sound a little stiffer). The Boogie has a really nice spongy feel but without a flubby bottom end..
Great thing about the 3+ is that it does fender, Marshall and high gain/Soldano-ish tones all in one!!
Even better!!
Tim..

A friend of mine in a retro band uses a moody ( made in australia in the 70s ) best sounding retro sound ive heard, runs very hot though.
We tried out our new soldano pre in the studio today and i was very pleasantly surprised sounded great for a heavy sound(rethinking about getting a mesa).
We have a few amps, any sugestions for anything new?
Fender Blues Deluxe Tweed
VOX AC15 Herratige Series
MusicMan HD130 late '70's
Marshall jcm 800 50w head
Soldano SP77 Tube Pre-amp
Laney 2 channel
VOX Brian May 6"
Marshall battery powered

there is a guy that is going to start making moody amps again this year apparently, don't know any more it might just be a pipe dream.
after learning about aussie amps being made in th 60's and early seventies, I am really impressed with them, brands like moody, goldentone and rex
I will give you an arm wrestle for the music man..... very nice amps that not many people seem to know about....
how do you find the laney? I have heard some good reports from people but never found one that sounded any good to me, I am sure they are a good product, just not for me
maybe something with an american distortion sound to it would be all I would add to the collection but thats if you are being picky, that collection covers more thn enough sounds, and just add a clean boost to the jcm and there is the american sound, kind of
or get any amp handmade in australia, but I am a bit partial to aussie amps and their makers,
I am just going through an obsession phase at the moment with guitar amps that will hopefully end sometime soon...... where I have EVERY sound coverd, but thats just me
