I cannot not think of a single instance where
Advertisers lead the editorial content of AT
Well i can actually but that was before I hooked Andy
Up .. With them

And I was the guy that got andy writing for them in the first place for those with shorter memories
Then me

Point being AT was as protected as a mag could be..
Protected by writers and a editor with integrity !

Now
If your best writers arent there anymore or walk off the job well .... things change .. its no biggy things always change in this world
we can all be replaced in that mag .. and i am sure will be .. to a point

but its the stuff that me and my like minded friends already do that need not disappear
I guess we will just have to find another time and place for it :)

Just in case my previous comments might be misconstrued –

I was reflecting that, in any context, it's difficult to appear impartial when accepting ad / sponsorship money and that appearances can be just, if not more, important than the way things actually are. In my opinion this makes ad-supported revenue models for online content tricky.

I wasn't having a go at AT or their writers. Lots of mags review gear they also advertise.

Well, if the 12ish guys publishing an online thing of some sort is still on the table, I'd be interested in contributing.

Obviously I could interview people here in Perth, I'm the kinda guy who occasionally rings up other studio owners and comes in for a coffee and a chat anyway. Plus I've a huge interest in the business side of things, and making the most out of very little and the nitty gritty low end of things. So I'd have something to write about other than interviews as well.

There's a lot going on here in Perth on a national scale, lots of bands touring, getting JJJ play, going international, etc. So there's loads to talk about with those involved.

Actually, now that I've written this post, I'm pretty darn keen.

I'd also like to clarify that I wasn't pointing fingers at AT either when talking about advertising wrong doings.
If there's a company advertising there audio product in an audio mag they're bound to be reviewed at some stage (it would be criminal not too). It's when it gets obvious and they start taking up large editorial space that gets erky.

If it's to follow the - Tape op/Trust me I'm a scientist Hybrid model - I'd be willing to contribute 1500 words in a trial run. Anyone?...

You see its the sense of community
We have managed to build around here that
I will not let be taken for granted and used as a means
Of pure commerce by anybody
Going forward i will be less careless about
What i will give away just because i can
Me thinks

I have no firm ideas what to do next in audio journalist land
Something will turn that fits us all i am sure
Keep it coming

Well I'm in. Not entirely sure how I can help but I'm happy to write/interview/review etc.
I think one of the things that I missed when I was young in this field was a community that would mentor and support the next generation. Well, there's a community here and I'm happy to contribute what I can.

Likewise, and as I know a few who "unknowns" who mentored me and have have been recording since the 60's, as well, many of the "name engineers" started out at Rambler where my Audek came from, I would love to be involved in researching a bit of that history and bring it to the up and coming generation...a sense of history that would be Melbourne centric.

Well I'm pretty handy with a web interface, am an experienced editor/proof-reader and I am happy to be the central scrutinizer (let's see if we can spot the FZ fans.)

For starters I don't think 3000 words is realistic or desirable - a web audience doesn't want to read anything much longer than 1000 words. For reference, this Sydney Morning Herald article (I picked it at random) is 1260 words.

We could also do everything through Google Docs - it's a brilliant private, shared environment.

What we have here is like a mag anyway, - but better - its fluid/live and evolving.
we talk about products /DIY /how to fix things /troubleshooting etc
Everyone's getting/sharing ideas and knowledge.
This here is live! - not Bi-monthly! and no Ads!!!
This is better than a magazine when nobody is looking

Google Docs stipulates in its terms and conditions that it owns all content transmitted through the program...not my cup of tea tbh if i was the instigator of such an idea as this.

In term of contributing and managing content wordpress or similar has it covered - assignable roles (contributors / editors / etc) and versioning means stuff can be uploaded proofed and published without the need for google docs or similar. Would prob need an organising system but that doesn't need to be via google docs - plenty of other tools for that.

Thinking about this a little more – I don't think the idea is to create an 'online' magazine, better to build something that for the online space that shares stories etc. that are too big / involved for a forum and of interest / importance to a local audience of recording types.

Histories of the recording industries in general, and Australia in particular, are pretty woefully documented – there's lots of fascinating people and stories to be told. I think the type of format we're discussing (online, medium length, multimedia, community authored) would be an interesting way to discover and celebrate some of that heritage – as well as new and interesting people, places, projects and ideas.

I think the way to go might be to spend a couple of months collecting interviews / stories to have enough material to start with. If it feels like a chore or that the idea isn't going anywhere interesting we could just share the content here and / or feed it to someone else to publish.

Anyway – Manning and I make 6, we'd still need another 6 on board to make things feasible.

Once in a bluey I would be prepared to do a piece on some esoteric boat anchors I have accumulated, might even do something on valves/tubes (my wife thinks they are funny light bulbs, I have not bothered to explain the difference). As long as it is fun and does not become a bore or subject for argument.

To me there's a pretty distinct difference between a forum and a e-magazine/community-blog/epub. Forums are engaged by people in a very active way, you register, you sign up, you post usually between 50 words and a few hundred, and there's usually a fairly limited number of people. And this community in particular is pretty private and small, which is great - it hasn't got gearslutz-itis.

However, if we put together an e-publication of some sort, it would be far more passively engaged with. It would be read without membership, by a far greater number of people, and we'd be writing bigger content with bigger ideas.

There are a few levels this forum does work on and probably a bunch it doesn't work on as well

the number of lurkers and repeat viewers is F@#$ing huge !
a simple run through the hits we receive a day is outrageous ,
but the numbers have to be weighed up against russian ladies and various spambots
so you would never really know how big we really are - its all relative
but type of the names of gear we all use and love into
google and you will see how read and big this forum really is !

and in perspective we are much bigger then the local fishing , four wheel driving , and golfing forums in numbers of hits a day repeat hits and numbers of actually posted items as well
that will do me .. :)
we are also the largest online proaudio playground on this side of the world - but we cannot touch gearsluts
suits me too

so the active conversing members count isn't that high (40-80) week to week and the names change as various members get bored or move along and the next ones come through
but the backroom numbers are very impressive !
so yes private and exclusive sure ..
small, unread ..? nah

but i like the fact everybody thinks what we do is small and tight knit
that suits me better then a blatant advertorial numbers count to make us feel important

however as i said before the forum is ultimately attached to my business and my brand
if i had of only known - trust me it wouldn't be !

what i think we are really discussing is what to do with the talent pool of audio writers that have been amassed over the years and may or surely do .. want to write in another more valued place

and how to see that group gets what it deserves and needs
so it can be sustained and viable
it may well have to be a commerce driven thing or maybe not i dunno ?

-frankly the current magazine can make its own arrangements in that regard
it will survive i guess - i kinda doubt the owners even know we exist !
well kinda ..

Rick, If I only have time to read one forum per day it is always this one. It's never filled with the usual dick size competition. As you mentioned, it has the sense of community that all other forums aspire. I personally would not like to see this change.

There is most definitely a business opportunity with the quality audio writers you are hooked up with, but, in my opinion, it would need to be disassociated from all your core businesses. Advertisers are fickle when it comes to this.

I look forward to the next incarnation of whatever it is you decide to do. I, and most other forum members, would undoubtedly be subscribers. If you need any financial, business structure or strategic advice, give me a quiet pm and I'll be happy to contribute in any way I can.

Its a real worry - I was with Yahoo and left them for dobbing in Chinese activists to the authorities - and went to Gmail and gradually have been feeling abused - soon they are gonna get the boot too
Have no idea where to put my "free" email account that will not be abused.... or swallowed up by a Murdoch (vomit)
what is it with all of these arrogant companies?

This might be a bit off track.. since we are talking about having too many great audio writers and no magazine

But I'd kinda like to see (hear?) a radio show about audio. Like

http://www.npr.org/series/129527317/the ... -interview

It IS audio right? Just an idea - business model not included
