GPS is GPS I think. Not sure it's relates to the phone system. I don't use the GPS on this phone. I could be wrong. My car GPS received a signal from the satellite.

GPS uses an internal antenna and is independent of the network, however once the phone determines it's absolute location from the satellites it then has to request maps from the network as they are not stored in the phone.

BEWARE of the big con: There is a feature called "assisted GPS" that many phones have. When you are indoors or in places with poor satellite reception, the system uses triangulation between phone towers to assist the phone to determine your location. It is expensive to use, and not really that useful anyway, and is chargeable, this is turned on by default in some phones, so make sure that you check that if you have a nav phone that you turn this feature off, or at least check with your carrier as to what the charges are.

Other tip: If you see an incoming number that begins with 19, don't answer it.

I cant see why phones have to have all this extra sh1t (camera, games, email, internet, MP3's, WAP, WOP, WIP.......)
Thats why we have computers at home/work for email/internet/etc.. supposedly!!!
Call me old fashioned, but a phone should be a phone.
Honestly, I have a Nokia, it doesnt drop out, I can make calls, txt or send pics without any problems. It has WAP and email function, but I've never even turned those functions on..
If I could get my old Nokia 3310 working again, I'd use that - reliable and no-bull operating!! However, it didnt completely survive a 7 week African safari in 2005 :-(

I agree. You should also be able to throw a phone against a wall in a moment of frustration, find the various components littered on the floor, put it back together, then call your wife and apologise for cutting her off. :)

A GPS receiver picks up time coded signals from multiple GPS satellites, and from that works out its distance from multiple satellites, to tell it where on the surface of the earth it is... (so technically it's trilateration, not triangulation)

Anyway - some phones have maps built in. Like my Nokia 6110. I have no data plan, but I can go into maps, look at where I am, search for streets, etc. it can show where I am in real time, and where stuff is.

What my phone won't do, without a data plan, is work out a route for me. but thats OK.. I can work out a route by myself. Just like I do with a street directory... I just like having a basic roadmap in my phone for anywhere I go in australia, if I'm going somewhere new... and it's really handy to watch where you're going as you drive.... don't have to look out for street signs in the dark anymore.

my nokia 6110 on virgin mobile has been more than fine for me. no dropouts. no weirdness. makes a call when I need it to. receives a call when someone rings me. 2 year plan. $30 a month. $180 of included calls and sms per month. free calls and sms to other virgin phones.

i don't really think its a massive problem, at first i was surprised by no copy paste and no forward but it more than makes up for it in lots of other ways, being able to look up addresses via google maps etc while in the go, grabbing email from anywhere, synced calendars etc

if all you want is a talk/sms/pxt phone then buy something else

my iphone replaced a stolen laptop and has been great to have 80% of the laptops capability in my pocket


and using VNC on the road to log into my mac mini at home which means i can do near on anything with it

Well said Marty - Its about what u want in a phone...

My only gripe with the damn phone is when it just decides to drop my emails which always seem to be long work related emails which are too important to just turn around and say "you know what $#!@ it, im not sending that damn email" Atleast like 4 times since i got it, I have banged out atleast 2 emails only to realise they have been lost, no unsent items, no drafts, no bounce back nothing. Even worse than that is when u don't realise they have not been send and you go about your business and then a couple of days later you get a phonecall to the tune of "Hi, I sent you an email but didnt receive any reply" Then you feel like a real $!@#

Everything else, the lack of copy paste, the lack of forwarding contact details, the crappy battery life, I can look past it all, but when it actually gets in the way of doing my job properly, or even answering personal emails effectively, now that is a real problem...

I don't see how its unreasonable in this day and age to expect a phone to do all those things, and still work perfectly well as a phone, and still provide basic functionally expected by reasonable people.

See, other phones have been doing all those things you listed for years - and also working perfectly well as phones.

Now the iphone has a big pretty touch screen with multitouch, and integrates nicely with your computer (if you have a mac) but outside that, does absolutely nothing groundbreaking and special that should excuse its poor performance as a mobile phone, or its lack of utility for simple functions.

So, yeah... its an awesome and beautiful gadget, and I'd love one to play with too - I just think people get a bit too involved with and personally invest far too much in their apple branded consumer items. And that this makes their apple branded consumer items way less good than they should be.
