jesus , i mispell and mispronouced just about everything !

i thought just as most guys i have spoke about this that i was having a laugh that we could all relate to.

in retrospect i was certainly mistaken in using one particular example who was actually a client ( well i never charged him and wont let him book again but i digress )

but let me tell about that guy so the facts are clear...at the session start he said to me
" be carefull with what you do today because i have golden ears and i wont miss anything , like most of your clients will"
and then started on about poltecs and apodgee , and his audio engineering quality was unusable horseshit which he assumed i could easily attend to .

i ended the session after 1 song (3 hours of hell ) and charged him nothing.
if that article reads as if i was belittling anybody it was the just idea of guys like him
i chose on purpose to leave the golden ear quote out maybe because he would know i was taking the micky - so maybe i was ..? dunno , as usual i was more interested in a laugh that studio people could relate to

that said i still thought it was fine, AT thought it was pretty funny when we edited it down
nobody to blame but myself really - oh well

i haven't read the article, however i have been corrected by rick on my supposed incorrect pronunciation of 'pultec'.

i guess that's the problem with english in general - ambiguity of pronunciation. you see, 'pultec' is a portmanteau word (pulse technologies = pul tec) so I and a few other people assumed the u would be like a u in pulse. however, apparently, it's like a u in pull.

english used to be like french and german, with accents to show how a vowel is pronounced. but they got dropped for some reason or another. that's the nice thing about french (which I'm learning) - there is absolutely no ambiguity in how a word is pronounced.

Must have been a very stressful day cause in all seriousness I've seen Rick keep his cool under stressful and painful conditions when others would have packed up for the day, sooooo this session he speaks of must have been ummmm really bad I guess.

i reckon it was about 5 years ago, or thereabouts.

i think the older you get, the more difficult it is to learn another language. i spent the first year comparing everything to english and looking for an equivalent, which was a big mistake. the trick is not to question, just to accept. ie a table is a female (la table), but a chair is a male (le siège) - and note the accent on the e!

i'll have to check with the wife, but I'm pretty sure the french would say pultec with the u as in pull, but a little like the u in use. definitiely not the way I used to say it!

I reckon if you can master French you're halfway to conquering any language. I like the sound of spanish, just sort of rolls off the tongue.

HI THERE FOLKS. IT'S ANDY STEWART HERE FROM AudioTechnology, NOT RICK O'NEIL.

I'm using Rick's login name right now so that I can post this response quickly... hence my appearance under this wacky disguise.

Just been reading this series of posts and wondered if anyone was prepared to have their text printed in AudioTechnology this week. The long and the short of it is that I've had a few rather snide responses to Rick's last column, and I'd like to balance some of the negativity with some positive responses if I can. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but at the moment the collection of letters makes out like Rick was right out of line with his article, which wasn't the case at all I didn't think. So if anyone is up for their thoughts being printed in AT, either my writing to me directly tonight (andy@audiotechnology.com.au), or giving me the go ahead to grab the text straight off the forum, I would much appreciate it.

As for what Rick writes in AT, he and I usually have a four hour conversation about a topic before he writes it, so I was well prepared for a few people to get their noses out of joint over this issue's column. Personally I thought it was funny. I just thought I'd make the brief point that as far as I'm concerned Rick is entitled to write whatever he likes, whether it be positive, negative, humourus or outrageous. I just wish he could spell. :)

Cheers.

You have my permission but I'm certain there's nothing worthwhile of mine to grab. Frankly, I've been dicking around with this because I knew Rick was in his article. Some people gotta get a life.

I vote this one, even though it's totally irrelevant to Rick's article, even though I don't know what he wrote.

I dont think I have read the article yet....

I am massively stressed so no peices fit together for me....so I am taking time off and learning to enjoy music again, playing a bit of guitar, doing some unusual mic techniques and thinking outside the square and a few other thngs

but on topic,

Ricks coloumn is the first thing I read in AT. it is generally a humerous anticdote to life in the australian music industry by someone who works in the industry instead of a person reading internet forums and taking other peoples views as their own. but they give me something to think about. I almost always find something insightful in the article and see a point or a message, or something we should know.

for me I have found it is the people that take this piss on themselves and around them that are good at what they do, good for a laugh, and just an attitude that makes things fun and a better working environment. having a bit of fun and sharing a humorous yarn doesn't mean someone takes less pride in their work, but knows the importance of not taking things too seriously.

This life thing only happens once, so for better quality of life I really think people should lighten up, have a joke, and not take themselves and other people so seriously.

the fact that people feel the need to write in and complain is a little astonishing for me.
in all honestly I think if AT lost Rick last word, I wouldnt be phased if I missed an issue

Nah, my German spelling is terrible. The last thing AT needs is a flood of complaints saying I spelt "Goot" wrong.

In the time it takes to write in complaining you could put down rough ideas for at least 2 new songs....maybe you could record them with a mogue synthemasizer.

I remember when I first saw your last article Rick, I scanned through it to see roughly what you were on about this time, but my eye kept being drawn to that wholesome semi-naked girl in the ad on the facing page and my mind got to wandering and I never did finish reading...

So today I went back and tried again (she's quite attractive!) and finished it this time and although I reckon it's not one of your best pieces it reflects industry thinking and as such is perfectly valid.

So keep 'em coming and don't worry about the dickheads.

Well at least it's promoting discussion.
for the record the correct "medical " term for having your head up your arse is "Cranio-rectal Syndrome".
And yes people should be corrected with pronunciation of names. A Name is a Trademark and an Identity and rest assured the same detractors to the article who took offense because it (the article) pinpointed their ignorance would get upset if you pronounced their names incorrectly. Being defensive and outraged is always a sure sign of embarrasment.
So Rick, keep writing the same way. I'll look forward to your next article.

and if all else fails ...Joke 'em if they can't take a F@*K....

Ricks Article

Postby thefridge » Wed Apr 22, 2009 2:08 pm

Witchdoctors have their spells , Doctors have their unprononcable syndomes, Priest have their incantations, Teenagers have their illogical expressions, in fact, everyone who seeks to identify with their peers MUST use the correct pronuciation, or they will show themselves to be noobs! This is a very old concept, where power over words (in the absence of science) was accepted to be actual power, as demonstrated in the rumpelstiltskin fairytale, and the ancient hesitation to reveal ones name to a stranger. Naming something gives power, therefore control, this being an integral part of religion.
The article was not a light peice, but it was humorously written, as usual. Perhaps like the one about the nugget of gold under the boulder! cheers, Mick
