i think the obvious point here is we are all struggling to drop the names , as i said there must be a bunch of success stories
but i wonder what ratio that is to the numbers of bands that went into a store and bought a home studio so they didn't have to pay anybody.
and then the number of bands that DID pay somebody and are still waiting for the limo to pick them up !

there are all lot of players in this game we do

Perfect . Think Joe Dolce- Shutupayaface, Flying Lizards' remake of Money, etc etc, where it is the "art" of moneymaking, where music is only the medium used to gain fame, power, sexdrugsr+r. It is not about the "art" of music(making), which is a result of an irresistable, addictive? urge. The talent will find an outlet, but always with some hope of an audiences affirmation, be it one , or thousands. If it is sucessful, I put that down to equal parts of hard work, and dumb luck. cheers, Mick

There are many though who have recorded on less than stellar equipment but I'm sure were already in the Industry beforehand. Moby come's to mind here and possibly Ween (push the little dasies).

A bit OT - Muscles... That has to be the stupidest band name I've ever heard. Interesting to me coz I'm currently struggling with a band name for my more metal band.

Apparently he recorded his first album (For Emma, Forever ago) in a log cabin by himself... According to Wikipedia "The album has sold 130,000 copies in the United States up to January 2009." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_Emma_Forever_Ago I believe someone else did some mixing... Interesting coz you could say his album often sounds like a muddy mess of triple (quadruple?) tracked vocals with way too much reverb etc. And I have no idea what he recorded on but the thing has vibe and feel. When I first heard it I wanted to know who produced it coz I thought he must but a genius so I felt a little silly when I discovered it was self produced but there u go.

Also, I have been informed that Alanis Morissete's "Jagged Little Pill" was something of a home recording... I dunno how true that is though... (And after taking a quick look at the Wiki page, it doesn't seem so accurate...) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagged_Lit ... production[/b]

Jagged Little Pill was recorded using 16bit adats. So i guess that's just like a home recording ;-0

Yes it was a home recording. With Glenn Ballard in his home studio. Nothing NooB there.
Nickelback's Chad Kroger has a pretty impressive home studio as well where the last couple of albums were recorded. I don't think he could fit the SSL in his bedroom though so it ended up out in the barn.

I thought Hybrid theory by linkin park was....... but its not

the demo was..... and they used some of the files from the demo, but they used that demo for the showcase which got them signed to warner and then redid most of it at NRG......

Sufjan Stevens apparently recorded a lot of his stuff "in the bedroom".

reports of doing everything you shouldn't do... 32khz sample rate, using only SM57's and a C1000, bouncing tracks to a PC via the microphone input, etc, etc.

Some of his stuff sounds amazing!!

The buddy project is the studio he has been recording in. I'm not sure if this has a hint of the "Cher, we didn't use autotune" lie that was created. Perhaps a good room and a good performance are all you really need to get it right.
