very quickly, for all those who rolled their eyes at the concept of me using counter rather than a stripe of smpte :

i checked my schemo's and you are of course all correct - the counter signal is purely counter and no pretensions of being accurate smpte.

how i have managed to retain decent sync until now, i don't know (going by what you'se chaps all say).
but the fact is my technique has worked till now - tracking bass and drums to tape and guitars and vox to p/t, then dumping tape across using tape counter as sync source.

since my wife and i have just sold our place, the studio is going o move soon. that'll give me a chance to address all such issues.

in the meantime, i've got more channels of clones to build.
