Get the device operating where it operates best, or gives you the sound you want. I use -18dBFS as my 0Vu point. ( I use a set of JLM VU's that I built myself)
My saffire pro 40 is spec'd at 22dbm equals FS.
So, -18dBFS equals +4dBm
I adjust my preamps for the sound I want out of them, and make sure that I am not clipping. Generally speaking nothing really peaks over -6dBFS.
But i really just glance at the peak meters in Logic (which are always set to PREFADER) at the end of a pass, of the time I spend looking at meters, it would be 99% VU 1% Peak
