TV Ad Volume

WOW, I work for the ABC, spent most of my life in commercial radio and loudness was never a problem, well it was all loud but at least constant and no need to touch the volume control. Thank you for this long trail of passionate criticism of ABC's audio levels.

I hear these problems but I am not in a position to fix it, BUT I will copy and paste the responses of this forum, I will remove surnames and your organisation name for your own protection (unless you would like me to include it) and will pass this round to those that I think do care and may be able to at least raise the flag on these problems.

I think this will hurt enough for someone within, to listen

Just remember there is a difference between "loudness" and "Loudness"
The second one (with the capitol L) is a measurable, quantifiable standard that has only come into our world in the last few years. If a digital transmitter is sending an AC3 encoded signal, then there is most likely metadata associated with the signal. If the dialnorm is set to -24LKFS, then the content must measure -24LKFS. Many think this has to do with 5.1, but the reality is, even if the signal is stereo (or even mono) there is metadata.
I'd be happy to consult to the ABC.

I'm hoping they don't fix this problem - and hoping it gets more extreme.
Bring it on - the quicker people get way from this vested interest marketing garbage propped up as "entertainment" the better.
The volume of MSM lies and bullshit is much louder than the volume of audio

TV is now a dying propaganda machine, - just like Adolf Murdoch's garbage /MSM - (and unfortunately a lot of the ABC)

I dont watch much TV, but what I do watch, I really enjoy.

There is some great stuff on the ABC and SBS. Some really cool things like shows about photography and artists and the like. I like the history stuff, and the stuff about geography.

But most of it, I have no interest in... (idol, master chef, big brother etc, X factor etc )


Same with radio I am afraid.

I really only listen to DIG, and thats only rarely, and usually on the TV.

Your comments regarding audio levels on ABC have been forwarded to a Director at the ABC, I expect that action will be taken, I'll update if I hear anything.

Yes tried all the modes on the old mans tv
Samsung ..

The night mode didnt help
Movies was a disaster

Voice .. Was apparently better then nothing

Been enjoying those Louie docos recently. Nice to have so many on.

ABC do need to get their act together when showing docos. Every week on Sunday Best you need to crank the TV as the docos are consistently quieter than everything else. Kristy does her intro at 'regular' volume, doco is super quiet, ads come on after doco and you're diving for the remote to turn it down again!

I'm glad it's not just me watching the Louis Theroux stuff lately- I gave myself a week off doing anything productive between Christmas and NYE (also got the flu in the middle of summer!) and got through about 15 episodes. I love it. Christmas episode is my favourite!

Not gonna lie though, I didn't watch a single one on TV. Volume levels were pretty consistent on youtube/other streaming sites!

I listened to the afternoon session of the 3rd Test on ABC Radio yesterday.
The little Grandstand jingle they played every 15 minutes or so was like 10db louder than the commentary.
It's mystifying, as it isn't a paid for ad selling white goods.

Can you find out what sort of encoding is used just prior to transmission?
As an broadcast audio director, I would like to know more about what happens once my signal leaves the OB truck.
Personally, I like the idea of mixing to a standard and it seems to me if everybody does the same, this should all settle down.
Since the ABC is a part of the Freeview group, I would have thought they would be on board with this standard.

I don't know a thing about radio transmission and I suspect that its a little different for them.

Well - if the ABC is listening to these posts - can I please request that Mark Scott (MD) leaves his "job" pronto.
As a ex LNP man thrown in by "honest" John Howard - he has presided over the ABC becoming a politicized organization - and it treats us like is it a dumbed down MSM operation.

We had a young niece staying. She got bored and wandered off, while my partner and I watched the rest of the series on DVD.

Loving ABC iView too.
SBS OnDemand is not very good. Clunky interface and slow on my net connection.
