2nd control room on wheels...
sit in the car with producer and engineer and a Ipad running pro control to solo/eq refine the low stuff
cool idea, but would anyone really pay for that?... i thought any studio worth going to, would KNOW already whats happening in their low end?
as for references:
Bass mekanik cds as a mix reference...hmmm....all this cd is is 10 tracks of music, with subs mainly in the 20-30 hz area.....and lots of variety in the sub bassline as well...most mussic tends to have 1 note where the subs are hitting, which is pointless when you want to give subs a work out. And then there is 40-60 tracks of sweeps, and straight tones from 100hz all the way down to 20hz. Its used to tune the system, and cant see much. The engineering of the music itself is fairly average.
What i would do is use really well engineered Rap to reference subs. The best stuff i've heard so far music wise is anything by Bay Area rapper E-40 (past 2002 or so)....clean/minimal tracks with crystal clear vox, electronic drums, and very very well processed bass/sub channel, or a whole stack of popular tracks that come from the right area in the USA. The trick is to hear how those guys are using compression on the very low end material, it really makes or breaks a track (in the subs area), and like i mentioned before, alot of tracks with subs can be fairly useless if the low end isnt processed properly, or if the artist has decided that 40hz is "subs", it is in a way, but its not really where the fun starts (for me).
