Well i'll try not to be totally Mac biased so i will give a vote to one of the best bang for buck DAWs at the time for stereo editing etc being Cool Edit Pro. Left anything the mac platform had to offer along those lines, in the dust looking next to useless!

CEP/Audition is still my favourite editing program. Spectral editing is very powerful and makes life so much easier.

Last time I looked at Audition it's midi support was virtually non-existant, it's included effects were pretty useful though. I use Sonar 6, though plan to upgrade soon as the new version supports hardware ADC.

Stuff it....if feel like a bit of Pro Tools bashing today......
so i am posting what i have read about a little issue with delay overcompensating on Protools HD when using a hardware insert on a channel. I'm interested in how many tool's users know about this and have encountered it in their work....... Is it old news? has it been fixed in the latest version?
(I won't post a link to the forum this discussion is from unless it's ok by Rick?)

[ Ross just called me to see if my results were similar, and they were: If you are using a hardware insert on a channel, PT is overcompensating and giving you predelay. At 48k, I had to adjust by adding 24 samples, and it was 37 samples at 96k. That was going through a piece of outboard gear. When I just used a patch cable across the insert, I gained one sample.
Ross was using the Digi converts and I was using the Apogees, and we both had this problem.
Here's my recommendation for anybody using the inserts who wants to know how much to compensate for:
Print a sine wave on a track. I actually started recording, and then started the generator so that I had a start point from which to measure. Now assign the output of that channel to a bus, and record onto a new channel via that bus, with the insert assigned through whatever piece you are using. Record that printed sine wave with the insert onto the new track, and zooming in on slip mode, measure the amount of sample from the beginning of each wave. Then just type that number into the +/- bracket in the delay comp window. '
BTW, Ross and I are not using PT8, and I don't know if this is fixed in that build, but it's disconcerting to see how badly they mangled it. At one sample rate, the compensation made by 300Hz wave exactly 180˚ out of phase with the original. If you are using an insert for parallel compression, that might be something to consider! Take the time to figure these things out when you have some down time, and save yourself a mixing headache later.]

Nah! The old "you only get what you pay for" argument is not gunna cut it here.... you'll have to do better than that:)
At it's worst it is another bullshit form of elitism used to differentiate the have's from the have not's in the holy of holy's, the market place!

Haha! classic. Ok kids lets all take a step back a chill a bit. Somewhere amongst all this bullshit we all try to make good records. I don't know about you but I've learnt a good
song will sound good however its recorded (within reason), because of the song. The average public could'nt give a rats about who, where why, or how it was recorded. So lets all just
enjoy the platforms we choose and be done wth it. Be nice and i'll open a new pack of iced vovo's ok.

fairlight
yes i really used a fairlight.. i loved it. one studio had series IIX - with midi...woo hoo.. the other i worked in has a series III. i used to use the fairlight for tracking & midi. most drums were fairlight/samples. i really loved it. it wasnt called hard disk recording.. backup was imposable bla bla bla... there releasing a "new" all series all libraries fairlight for about $5k USD... i want one. i probable will never use it (same as ricks old K250)
seriously we all get way to gear wingy. record good bands playing good music on whatever stuff you have. most of the classic albums/songs i love dont sound that good. the really good sounding stuff can be boaring.

Seriously ....... no offense was meant..... but maybe some clarification? When i read Damiens comment re wanting a Porche but not being prepared to pay for it, i assumed it was an analogy of the pay for what you get argument for justifying the cost of Protools HD. I think in a forum like this you can express opinion and disagree with others without the anger element. I don't give a rip what DAW someone uses but i stand by my opinion that many choose the pro tools le option out of ignorance rather than informed unprejudiced choice....... and i agree with "it's about the song/performance not the gear.
I'll never forget a few years ago sitting in a mastering studio in Melb listening to some recordings the Dirty Three had done. Nearly fell off my chair when the mastering engineer said they were recorded on one of those old cassette recorders like the Ta@#$% porta studio. It just happened that some mighty fine performances were captured on it.

I don't have LE or a Casiotone, must be why I can't make good records!
