I think I want a baritone electric - to fill out space in tracks where a bass or kit isn't the sound and (more immediately) to compliment the sound of an acoustic parlor on an upcoming project.

There would have to be someone who's gone down this path before.

Anyone got a favorite or can offer advice?

have seen and played these - I owned one of the first run danelectro reissues (standard scale) and it was a pain in the ass to keep in tune and the lipstick pickups were a bit too honky for what I want.

A friend of mine has a few Jerry Jones', including a baritone , it sounds great (think solo in Galveston); only problem Gerry retired this year and no more new guitars. Not that expensive then, who knows now

You could get a warmoth conversion neck and strap that onto any tele/strat/JM and bobsyouruncle
They make great parts. Another option is the Eastwood range, the sidejack is meant to be pretty good.

Jerry Jones' are the ones I think - difficult to find in Oz at the moment I think.

The eastwood's look ok, airline baritone sounds really nice in their demo clips. Anyone actually have one of these?

Not sure about Warmoth necks, as I'd need a body to sacrifice or buy a new one and I've got enough projects already - really want something I can just pick up and play.

Yamaha Drop 6 are nice guitars but I don't think there is anyone bringing them into the country any more. You may find one second hand.

What about a 7 string?

I'll take a look a look at the Yamaha. I can't quite come at 7 strings, I don't suit the way they play (or vice versa). I'm almost always in an alternate tuning on guitar and the extra string does my head in.

7 strings confuse the hell out of me but they are a long scale neck!

A couple of my mates play 8 and 9 strings. Madness!

I didn't think the bass vi's were quite the same as a bari (longer 30" scale, thicker strings)?

Based on youtube vids and review - this looks promising. But who wants to buy a guitar they haven't picked up and played?

Yeah I know but I think they sound similar to a baritone (although I could be talking out of my hat). I'd always assumed the solo on Galveston was a baritone but apparently it's a Fender VI.

That Galveston sound isn't really what I'm looking for - more Buddy Miller (which is a jerry jones bari) and his ilk.

I use a Gretsch Baritone...it's the Electromatic series.
Gotta say it sounds pretty good considering how cheap the pickups must be.....and it's got a bigsby.......
I've used it on quite a few theatre projects....a great texture to have in your kit.

I bought it after seeing Calexico use one live

cost $700 ..new....in Sydney.
