some mic techniques for rotary speakers?

hi all I have a yamaha ra 100 rotary speaker and have really struggles to capture a good sound. ...
this bad boy rotates on the vertical axis where as leslie rotate on the horizontal.....

I have tried a figure 8, m69 a few others. I just cant get it to translate

any tips, secrets? suggestions? would be greatly apreciated

When you tried fig 8, is that with another mic- MS? Stereo mic options if you haven't given them a go, will help get the spatial stuff going on with a rotating speaker.

is it an open backed cabinet and does it work on its side like a leslie

just cause i reckon doppler sounds better with human ears horozontally rather than vertical

Try putting the 2 mics at right angles to one another on 2 sides of the cabinet for best stereo image, or in the case of your unit, one on the top pointing down and one at the side pointing horizintallly.

thanks for the responses..... have started a thinking and expreimenting process.....

it is a closed back...... one the side is something I am going to try.... but this amp in question doesnt really do a doppler as such.....

there are 2 speakers on seperate vertical axis. one moves faster then the other to create a chorus type of sound. about half a foot apart.....

listening to it on its one is a very unique experience and this amp on many occasions has been referred to as a "dave gilmour" type of sound. and I think he used one of these amps on animals.

Hmm, M+S, or ORTF would certainly be worth a try, but to get a real sense of space try a pair of omni's arranged so they make a large triangle with the speaker, say 2m a side.

dont know about your box but with a leslie a common approach is to place a large sheet of wood on top of the cabinet to create a top "floor" locking the sound stage in between the floor and the board and then to mic both floor and new ceiling in stereo ( ie a 3 0r 4 feet space
it makes the sense of stereo movement "captureable"
maybe with your box move it into a corner

i always use a 47 on the bottom ( bass) and a 57 on the top ( treble) and then pann them a bit left and a bit right

the sense of stereo is usually very real and easy to put into a mix

i stole this of us producer don gehman ( counting crows meloncamp etc ) when he did a hunters and collecters album at festival an eternity ago - come to think of it i learnt a lot that month that i probably claim as "my techniques"

Rick is that a 47 as in U47? If so would it be 47 FET?

yeh i meant u 47 and a fet is fine for the job but we both know the tube is better
i am still amazed at all the 47 owners out there that are scared to put their tube 47
infront of serious spl in the pursuit of serious tone chasing.

good enough amp mic for the beatles and the stones - good enough for me !
