API 2500, mmmmmmmmmm nice

Postby heathen » Sat Sep 29, 2007 9:48 am

I just purchased an API 2500 and used it for the first time in a session yesterday, firstly I'm extremely glad I purchased it after yesterdays results. Such a versatile unit, so many different flavours are available out of the same unit, the thrust setting "loud mode" is sort of like a reverse of the crush feature in the Smart c2, not for everything but still usefull.

Another great feature is the "in and out" button with the full bypass switch as well, so you can still add flavour without compression. The automatic output gain button is a godsend for working quickly without having to screw around too much with levels, and the actual gain makeup sounds superb, unlike the c2 who's gain make up sounds a touch harsh sometimes.

If anyone is looking for a superb compressor I'd suggest checking one of these out, you'll be happy you raided the piggy bank. I'm sure anyone who owns one would agree.

DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!! don't do it, it will cost $4k. API is nothing but great, once you use them you're hooked. Heath sold 3 comps (1 x stereo & 1 x mono) a mic to get his.

Yeah and I bloody miss it too heh, the SOC is a great comp, glad your enjoying it Barney. Smooth eh? I've still got a buzz essence, which is staying!

Though I reckon the API will suit the stuff I'm doing, just a bit more versatile. Another great feature is the link section in 6 different positions with normal or lp/bp/hp filters. Gotta love that.

So yeah as Nic said I had to sell some pieces I like buttttt.............. I think the API is gonna be here a long time. If you had'nt lent me those 525's I never would have bought this unit Nic, does'nt sound exactly the same but both 525's and 2500 absolutely rock. I'll have to see how the s/c inserts perform next, to me that will usually turn any comp into a different sounding/behaving beast.

I noticed something strange though pleasing, I had cables patched into the sc inserts and in "feedback mode" noticed compression will not begin unless it "I think" has a signal present on the sc insert, I will know more when I send a signal into the sc as it was just patched ready to go, anyway the pleasing thing was the more threshold I added the more the auto make up increased in a very pleasing way. In feed forward mode this was not the case as the threshold seems independant of the sidechain when no sc signal is present thus still compresses the signal without allowing the big auto gain thing to happen. I'll test this out tomorrow.

Is this an inherent design thing with feedback style comps? Anyone?

Anyway I'm lovin this new unit.

Yeah being a bass player the Buzz is just always patched in whether i'm playing electric or upright.

Hey Nic, still haven't started on the Neve eq, pics will be here for sure when it's done though.

I'll be in Sydney tonight, is there any good gigs not realated to NRL that anyone can recommend?
