changing protools clock speed?

Postby jkhuri44 » Wed Oct 24, 2007 12:40 am

is it possible to change protools clock speed? as in totally variable? (everything in between 44.1 to 192) then switch back to another setting within the same session ...so it acts like varispeed..?

there is one or two varispeed plugins for protools which may achieve what you're after, but i believe clockspeed is locked down per session. ummmm - dunno which one, but i'm sure i have done it in the past . . .

if you're midi-ing (or using softsynths), then you can create a tempo map to achieve a varispeed effect.

the person that said i can do this said you can vari it "continuously"...ie. small increments...like for example 50Khz? or 90Khz?

the idea was in this session he wanted me to record in slower, then snap back into 44.1Khz....

i looked at him funny coz like you, i always thought sample rates were locked per session, and the only option was ever slowing down to record at half speed.

maybe sample rates can be changed continuously with other convertors use in conjunction with PT..like apogee stuff or any of the other higher end ones...im using a Digi192...

Jk

My recollection is that you can do something very much like this with the RME interface software, which reclocks the input/output rather than actually changing the sample rate per se: I've seen the Fireface 800 do on the fly varispeed.

Pro Tools Mix and HD systems with a Sync I/O, SSD, or Sync HD allow you to varispeed the session from the session setup window. Without these boxes, or if you are on a LE system, you cannot really varispeed. You could possibly do it with a clock source like a Apogee Big Ben clocking through one of your digital inputs, but it all depends on the system that you have.

i was asked to "slow the clock speed down" so we could record in a particular vocal part, and then upon playing it back at regular speed, the vocals would be pitched up ever so slightly, and sound more childish....this way would have sounded better than PT time compression expansion....with this technique the instrumental would be slowed down, we'd record, then snap back into the normal playback speed

prettty much the same thing as varying tape speed.. i think?

You could, but it's convoluted. You pitch shift the whole track down or up a small amount, then record your vocal to it, then pitch shift the vocal back to the original pitch. It's much easier to use varispeed on the fly. It's a old analogue tape machine trick.

The reason why? Well, it makes a double track sound different. The formants change a little so you never have a a situation where the effect of the double track is lost because the lead and the double are almost identical. That's roughly the idea. Subtle isn't it.

thanks for typing that out...i couldnt be bothered....but u read my mind daniel...hahaha

the idea in this particular situation was to track the vocals at a slower clock speed so the vocals would have a slightly more "child like" sound to them.... this was during a session recording an all women's african acapella group.

in regards to pitch shifting, there's someting about it that i dont quite like in principle, its like taking a texta and drawing a big squiggle all over the lovely audio you just recorded...even if it doesnt sound like any artifacts are there, it just "feels" dodgy...LOL

ended up at UTS' studios with the 414's in a ribbon pattern...

turned out sweet, obviously not the best mics for the job, but they were in the pocket, so it more than makes up for it!
