You know things are bad when Rolling Stone are complaining about how bad records sound these days...

yep indeedy...i'm finding it harder and harder to listen to many new albums on a decent stereo, so compressed and clipped it hurts my head.
talking about this just now with the missus and she said why aren't two album versions mastered....one for the mp3 market and to satisfy the A+R guys and one for folk who want to enjoy some dynamics and quality.
Seems simple enough

I think reverse psychology could work wonders here. All we as older farts have to embrace this sound for the short term, the more we complain the more the kids will want louder music, we should praise them for it just to confuse the living hell out of them.
Then within about 1 year I reckon you could almost guarantee they will say, hmmm all these oldies like this stuff loud hmmmm we better make records they cant hear, "turn it down a bit will you and don't clip it" they will all think to themselves "hahahaha you oldies are gonna hate these dynamics"? Then all we gotta do is start complaining that we want it like the good ol days with lots of clipping and extreme compression. They are bound to rebel.
Manipulation is the key.

last year i grabbed my ( 21 year old ) son and one of his mates who have grown up on a diet of downloaded mp3s and sat them in front of my tannoys and put on some vinyl.
they were amazed at the sound...it was like a whole new genre of art for them
unfortunately they headed off thinking that they just needed bigger speakers :(
