For me the best all rounder mic that I have used so far is the Blue Kiwi, that is recording vocals (male and female), piano, acoustic guitar, room mic for drums. Also it's not too expensive.

LDC wise the M149 I had I thought was a great mic, I know some do not like them as they do not have a lot of colour. Although as a allrounder pretty cool.
I really liked my old Soundelux U99 as well. Although would not say it worked on everything. Sometimes way to honest and not too much body.

I have an M149 and it can be spectacular when paired with the right pre. Something more coloured such as the API 512 or the 1073.
One of the most underated mics I have is the Rode Classic 2. I have achieved some great results on both Male and Female vox and it really shines on Acoustic instruments. It's a great value mic.

I have just ordered an Innertube Mic Mod for my U87. I ordered it unheard but I have read some amazing reviews. I will post some results when it arrives.

I agree with Nic, the thing sounds great on everything I've tried so far too. You'll be lucky to find one now under $1500USD, I know cause I've been looking.

Neumann Km85 ...no contest. can useit for vox in a pinch and anything else with more than acceptable results. If i were to do a whole project with one type of mic of my choice ,this would be it.

My pick would be an RE20. I use them for everything, which you can't really do with most mics. Vocals (always), kick, snare, guitar, toms, horns etc. The only thing I wouldn't use it on would be strings and piano.

The pre that you use has a HUGE influence on the sound. On vocals, into a V72 is it. For toms, a sytek. For kick/guitars, and AWA or neveish pre. Did anyone see those radiohead clips in the studio? Thom using an RE20 for vocals.

In fact, it's probably my most used mic in my cabinet.

Second would be neumann KM84's.

Still in perfect condition - never been in a high SPL environment either..

in which would be tlm 170

but I think a mic sound is relative to the pre used....
