Should I get a 1073
Well I'm thinking I should not go ahead with my 1073 purchase. I've ordered a BAE 1073 which is under $4K, but then I can get a dual AMS Neve 1073 for $10K........I know $10K. Anyway the BAE may take another 3 weeks to get here, so I'm thinking why am I getting it in the first place. I want to rent it out...well do I, the renting market takes a toll on your equipment, so maybe it's better staying at my place so me and me alone can hear it or I can tell people I have one.

should you buy a pair of 1073 for 10 k ...?
it depends how long 10 k takes you to earn
let me tell you it takes me a long time to earn and i am more then happy to sell neves for 10 grand , but hell no dont buy them for that much its insane !
cut to the chase these things are perfect rock music mic pres so go and buy real neves but just buy 1272 s pres get them racked up , and forget about the neve eq in the 1073 that is costing you a fortune
coming from a guy that knows eqs and knows neves backwards , and i have about 230 of the really good channels come and go in my life in the last 15 years
THE ONLY REASON YOU should be BUYING 1073 modules is for the mic pre .
if you want tasty eq so much buy tasty eq
hell buy a real pultec and add it on , you will still be 3-4 grand better off .
or of course if your independently wealthy , sure buy all the 1073 you can , hell buy twice that number :)
does that help ?

I have some 1272's and up to about 40 - 45dB gain they sound identical to a 1073's pre. Some people wire them up to wring more gain out but it doesn't sound the same. Mine are wired the stock way and I think it's 50dB max maybe but I've never found myself wanting more gain on anything. Usually only around 35db. Joe Malone does an addon that gives you the extra gain if you really want it but still preserves the sound. I think it adds another gain stage but I could be completely wrong.
I also have a pair I use as the summing amp for my console, I just patch around the board's amps.
There is this one thing original 1073's I've used do and it's a phasey sort of almost chorusey sound to the 12k on the top of the eq. I haven't found any other eq that does that, and I do really like it on acoustic guitar and vocals.
I've been after a good 1073 for a while for that reason, but at the price they are now I probably won't be getting one anytime soon.

I have a pair of JLM 1290's that i built and they rock. And for the price you can build a set for an entire drum kit.

Thanks guys. You right it's crazy prices with AMS stuff, there's no way I would ever get any return with a pair of AMS Neve 1073. Not waiting for the BAE either, ordered the Mercury M72 and will get some more gear from JLM. Remember I rent gear out to buy more gear and give bands good tools to work with at a very cheap rate.

You can get a pair of the 1073 pres without eq for about $4000.00 in a single rack space. Easy to rent and it has the "Neve" logo on it.

That's 4 channels for $8000. I recon you could hire that out in a nifty 2 double space rack case.
Cheers

Holy Sh*t - there is some seriously sweet outboard there.
I'd be happy to have at least 10% of what he's got.
Jeeez - and I'm lusting over a pair of API 512C's - they pale compared to the sweetness of this gear!!
:(

You get into it because you love the music........you end up loving the gear more and music takes a back seat.........
Still i would love a few of those bit's of gear. I DO need some outboard comps and one or two nice eq's........reality kicks in as i wake up to the school fees due next month, not to mention the Tarago needs the brakes done and new tyers......... and to think i used to work on that ship in my avatar.......
