Has anyone A/B'd the Peach EQ1P against the JLM EQP-1.
Both are Pultec style EQ's and are sweet looking EQ's.
Just wondering if there is much difference, considering the Peach is $3600+ and the JLM $2000.
There's no info on the Peach website at all and Joe has some nice info on the JLM site..
Anyone tried 'em??

With all respect, considering Joe's support of the little guys (the DIYers), I know who would get my business first.

im not sure exactly which one he was talking about, but last time i chatted to heath...about one of the JLM Eqs....he used all sorts of colourful language to describe the bass boost on the JLMs :P Not exactly an A/B but alas!
heath...u can fill TimS in on that :)

Jamil,
You are thinking of the 500 series EQ that Joe does PEQ500- I'm getting one of those (or maybe 2 in the future)
The Peach and JLM units I'm talking about are the full 2 unit rack Pultec style EQ's - I have posted some pics below..
PEACH
JLM
I'll be hearing the JLM 500 EQ at nIC's listening day coming up soon hopefully..
You can see the PEQ500 in the lunchbox here..

Yeah that little jlm peq sounds as fat as hell, but nice with depth and clarity in the bottom end, I dunno what it is he's done that some other eq manufacturers can't accomplish, the hf is pretty smooth too, I've gotta play with a pair some more too get a real feel for them. Was just messing with Nic's one and it did sound pretty amazing.
The size of the tranny in the thing is probably double that of any other 500 series unit I've seen.
But as Tim said the rackmount unit is $2000 a channel which is not too bad at all, I'm thinking the rackmount one has exactly twice the control of the 500 series unit, so yeah a pair of these will probably be sitting in my rack as soon as I can get the $4000 I need for them, if they sound great that is, I'm sure they must sound at least as good as the 500 series unit, probably much better.
I hav'nt heard the Peach one.

Rick - I'm not buying them.. I'm quite cashed out right now after some recent gear purchases - Neumann mics, 003, API lunchbox and some Purple compressors (2)
I'm more interested in the lunchbox PEQ500 that Joe does - it was more out of interest if anyone had compared these two lovely EQ's and their thoughts. I didn't know dave peach even did a Pultec style EQ until I saw one on Mick's site..
A Pultec would be nice to own - even one of either of these EQs would be nice, but far too expensive for me right now.

I really think for the money the JLM gear is fantastic. Anyway I'll have some of the JLM 500 series by early next week.
Hey let's have a listening session at RICK's.

I have one of the Peach Eq's, I really like it, you have to be careful not to put too much gain into it, but overall it is sweet.

i had a very early summit dual pultec type eq , they got the bottom end just about right but missed the rest , however the recent summit stuff including that model are junk imo.
the manley stuff ( which i have ) is nothing like " a pultec on steriods" or whatever the catch cry is they just played pultec out on peoples wishes becuse they needed to make people take notice ... it worked .
its great eq though but nothing like the sound that pultecs make .
look there are SOOO many pultec clones about some of them must sound like the real deal right ..? but a pultec is such a one trick pony why would you fork out good money for anything but the real thing .
they are not a versatle flexable unit , they are all about bottom end , and the meq well its all about mids but the highs on a pultec.... well see if you can find something nice to say about them and let me know.
certainly the easiest way to find out if a real pultec is what you need and what you will use is day in and day out ( which i do ) is just bite the bullet and buy one.
they only seem to go up in value so it always seems a safe bet to me.
i have 5 of them

To me the bottom end in the JLM peq 500 was nicer and tighter sounding than the tube tech pultec and also chunkier than the Mercury pultec, from memory.
I would'nt have a clue what a real one sounds like, but I know what I like when I hear it. Maybe they won't sound the same but they sound bloody good.
I've been looking for a dedicated LF eq for a while now that gives that gut pounding bottom end, with depth and clarity, something a lot of eq's fail to deliver, well the Avalon definately fails there.

I reckon Heath just answered the thread..... "I know what I like when I hear it."
That's all it ever should be about. Not brands/hype etc. Just what sounds good. Which, of course, is different for all of us.

howard i have no idea what "current" brands people should spend their money on
imo if they are looking for a pultec they should buy a pultec
if they are looking for something new well then dont start with the pultec knock offs - buy something that has its own signature tone
for instance recently i bought the new api eq after hearing it for 30 secs , it claims to be a dual enchanced api 50 b , but its nothing like one - its better
Pultec EQH-2..? single ended amp version of the EQPIA 2 racks high instead of three
much cheaper and actually better sounding then a EQPIA (well to those that can hear the difference in tube topology anyway ) , but dont go telling every body or they will jump 2k !
oh yeah i have two of these so i dont think its typo :)
damn ! bomb factory are on to it and they have a plug in of the eqh-2 - i guess i better shut up shop !

yeah, because plugins so totally replace the need for racks of hardware.
i really think i need to get a 500-series frame and start building / collecting 500 modules. everyone keeps banging on about them (and on and on and on).
so, off topic, but relating to the JLM 500 series eq, what's the best 'in' to the 500 series gear?

The 500 series stuff will beat most plugins I reckon but I'm starting to lose a little faith in the 500 series gear, a lot of the eq's, comps and pres sound great the first time you hear them but after getting used to them and using them heaps they do have downsides such as sounding grainy and a bit harsh at times if pushed even just a little.
Some call it colour and warmth, mostly sounds like mess to me.
Some of the best 500 series gear I've tried would be.
JLM peq, sounds great in the bottom end.
Buzz essence comp, great for bass and can be pretty good for vox.
API 525 comp, these little things sound great on vox once you find the sweet spot.
Hav'nt heard the JLM 99v pre yet, but am keen to see how it sounds.
A lot of the other ones I've tried would not really rate a mention.
Nic just bought himself a Mercury M72, now that will sound better than any 500 series pre available, guaranteed.
