R.E.A.M. - Recording Enthusiasts Anonymous, Melbourne

(came up with it at the dining table last night)

Astro (and anyone else, particularly of the West of Melbourne) - wanna catch up some time with us?
Finally, some chums to talk to who won't yawn when you get excited about pulling a new sound, or describing some bizarre signal-chain you just dreamt up!!!

a thought - most local councils actually provide small grants to help kick off clubs etc. make sure you sell it as having a particularly community focus (develop a charter around "our co-op endeavours to facilitate access to recording spaces and equipment for malnourished left-handed oompa-loopa's")

you won't ever get money for Avalon, but you certainly could get some for help with hall hire, brochures, basic setup type stuff . . .

well, i'm going to look into it, anyway. we've got the Spotswood community centre just round the corner. surely all those woodworking nights could happen somewhere else? Like, Altona?

and you might actually get some people outside this little corner of the internet to comg along , add the natural attrition rate of new clubs some time and some thoughts about why your into the idea and who knows ...?

Matthew and Astro - whassup? when can we arrange a proper R.E.A.M.ing for you? as mentioned, it's only one traffic light between Geelong and Spotswood, and you'se might even be able to car-pool.

anyone else want to cop a load?

how are we going to move forward on this? i can't see any of us actually having time to make it an official club. even with (all?) the Council Grant money that potentially comes with meeting the warm fuzzy social equity stuff they'd want to hear our intentions of pursuing . . .

but i do think we need to get ourselves well R.E.A.M.ed.

thoughts? moving forward?

Hey all REAM-ers!

I see a mention in the latest Audio Technology (oops - who did that?).

There has been a small catch up so far - a bit disorganised so sorry to all those who didn't know about it.

We tried talking about what REAM is - well i did - but it was much more fun swapping stories and ideas with some folks who don't fall asleep in 10 seconds.

So after discussions on consoles, preamps, ITB / OTB, hard-drive recorders vs. DAW's, what did we achieve?

Well, we drank beer, we drank coffee, we swapped stories and generally we met up. isn't that enough?

Hey - it was really cool.

Anyone got ideas for the next one?

us 'enthusiasts' don't drink, normally. of course not!

it appears to only be some kind of strange group behaviour resultant from an excess of audio-geekery.

maybe you should come along to the next one, to show us how to do it? i'm sure we all need the practice. and i'm just over the bridge from you (aren't i?)

sure, i can teach you all you need to know about belgian beer, and show you how to pour it... even make it if you're really keen. but you'll have to practice drinking it in your own time.

you know, the funny thing is - and people never believe me when i tell them this - i'm not really a gear-head. i'm more interested in the job than the tools.

but i do enjoy watching you guys get excited about stuff, it's cool, but it's just not really me.

but hey if you want to talk abbey yeast, coriander and orange peel, that's a different story...

Making beer is easy, making it taste great is another story, well I'm not the best cook either.

I reckon the main secret for beer is in the water supply, a mate of mine gets his water straight from an alpine river which runs through his property down near Cooma, one of the best home brews I've ever tasted.

dont get too "adventurous" with ur alchohol content either.."hmm, how about a 10% beer".....

that kinda thinking usually results in explosions...and yeast smells for half a year.

Yeah the Belgian beers have pretty thick glass, some of them go to 14%, 3 of those can be devastating. I always remember going to the Epoch beer hall but never remember leaving.

REAM has gone to another realm has it ? Anyway Im doing a mix at the Evelyn in Brunswick st Sat night as a funraiser gig [ 20 peice orchestra + a few bands ] so if you want to shuffle up to the FOH desk and tell me i suck i"ll buy you a beer (on the bands tab)!

hey chris H that sounds like it wold have been a great gig. how'd it g? sorry i missed it - i'm in the middle of rebuilding our 2nd bathroom. by the time the gig started i was probably asleep on the loor, snoring.

Overall it was a great night. I had my V8 vegi juice in the bar fridge to get me through.!!! Got off to a difficult start. After tuning the foldback , FOH and doing soundcheck with the big band, the venue filled up real quick and the first act pulled out a nylon string guitar with no pickup. Dam, i had left my AKG shotgun at home and it's my best option for high gain before feedback. I put a rode NT5 on it but now think a 57 would have been better. If you had of sided up to the desk at that time and said i sucked you would have been right! After one or two songs and pulling some low mids from FOH i got it up just above the crowd noise and drums! They were a difficult band though, singing off mic etc.
I was happy enough by the end of their set, and the rest of the night went fine. The big band was a blast, with some top ex collage of the arts musos playing. The last band was King Armadillo, a funk outfit, so got the PA hitting a bit harder after the more ambient mix for the big band.

hey well done - that sounds a very varied gig!
