I'm doing a live performance where I need to be able to record a number of different samples in real-time and play them back layered on top of each other, with the ability to switch them on and off so that I can vary the textures for each section of the piece. A bit weird I know. I was hoping to get hold of an electrix repeater because I believe it's capable of doing the job, but they're getting a bit rare and entirely too expensive. Can anyone think of a software solution or a suitable hardware solution?

I have Logic, Protools and Reason, as well as a MacBook Pro at my disposal.

Hi Dave!

Sorry I can't help you. But just wanted to say I was working with the Reservoir Dogs a few weeks back at Katoomba and they're support act was a girl who did the same type of thing as Imogen. I wish I could have remembered her name. It was pronounced Mickey except without the 'k'. She impressed me so much! I asked her what she used but unfortunately I can't remember what she said either other than "a Roland blah blah blah" (it was a very late night with little sleep the night before as well). So amazing to watch and so amazing to hear.

Anyway, sorry I can't help you, Dave but I'm curious to know myself.

Well JK that might be the software answer. But Dave if you're the performer then maybe you're after the hardware version. This girl I was talking about had a specifically designed hardware version with a big stomp box like a Boss foot switch. Maybe it was a Boss, thought it was Roland (same diff). But it worked seamlessly.

Yeah - more than happy to try a software OR hardware solution... it's a one-off, for now, so a smaller outlay would be nice... I have downloaded the FL demo overnight - we'll see how that goes. ;)

That said, Roy, your suggested footswitch looks like it does EXACTLY what I'm after, which would be way cooler than using a computer. I'll have to try and track one down!

It sounds like the RC-50 has 3 separate tracks which can be controlled independently but I believe the RC-20 layers phrase upon phrase so that you can't control the level of each sound once it is recorded. I think the Electrix repeater gives you independent control of 4 tracks.

Ableton live is probably a good option. When you have recorded the samples live do you have to play them back straight away or is there enough time to do a quick chop? If so you could chop them first then loop in ableton.

it's all happening in real-time, just like in the imogen clip. No chance to chop stuff, set loop points etc... it's all gotta happen on the fly.

yeah - Mirangi does use a looper pedal, they were all the rage among folky / hippy / world beat artists a few years ago. They're definitely an option worth considering as the pedals lets you record and layer samples on the fly. Kind of a one trick pony though...
