Are these fake?

Postby Futureman » Wed Jul 30, 2008 8:47 pm

I'm guessing so, for that price.

I wouldn't mind a Beta87.. but i'd like to be Shure.. (Bad Pun)

Feedback of 91 as a buyer, zero as a seller, no feedback in the last 12 months. Probably this would be a good auction to bid on if you were going to pick up the items yourself and pay on delivery... Don't want to think the worst of the seller, but there are fake Shures out there, even the seller might not know if they were fakes. The price is very low, why sell genuine mic's for so little?

This second lot are also fakes. The wording of the ad is identical to the first, down to the misspellings. I have reported this listing to Jands.

They tell me that they have had some of these come in for repair, from people not realising that they are fakes. When they were opened up in the service department, they were found to be dynamics!

Wow what a great idea, I need to get into these, that phantom power stuff really blurs the mix.

has anyone ever modded an sm7 to take phantom power? I am intrigued as to how it would sound like, I know a metal guy that loves the sm7 but he really has to be at the grill, and I figure adding modding it to take phantom power would make it more sensitive.

That would just be incredibly silly. A dynamic works very different to a condenser. Ever wondered what phantom power actually does? Google it... you'll probably find some good diagrams somewhere.

So this is the state of audio forums is it? Thanks Roy for keeping an open mind

I never said changing it to make it a capacatince mic, but more keeping it a dynamic and making it passive by changing the the transformer. which I think would make it more sensitive.

you have never been curious about trying things left of the middle? wondered what it would sound like if it did this? the reason I visit here is because it isnt like other forums, it is relativley open minded.

starting a flame war over the internet is not something that interests me, I dont care for it. respsonse like that will make this place exactly like every other forum.

FYI: Blue makes an "Active Dynamic", or at least a Dynamic that requires phantom to operate.

Basically the mic includes a phantom-powered active balancing circuit in the output stage :-)

Therotically, you could probably include the same sort of electronics in the SM7.

Whoa man! Back off! I wasn't having a go at you? Chill out. Didn't mean it to sound 'closed minded'. Please show mercy on me! Geez!

That sounds more like it, Smash. I just thought it makes no sense to mod something to 'take phantom power'. Rather... you mod something- and then maybe (or maybe not) you require phantom power to make the circuit operate.

...naaah... you mentioned (2 posts above this very post!!) adding phantom power.
that's a very different thing to changing the transformer.

But yeah.. phantom power could be added. if you do that, all you are doing is putting a preamp stage inside the mic. before you go down the line.

you need to do this with condensor mics because 0) any condensor mic element apart from an electret needs a polarising voltage to work, anyway. 1) they have a very tiny signal coming off the element, and 2) because the output impenence from the element is very very high... running the condensor element with no electronics on even a meter of cable would not be good. Putting an amplifier to buffer the signal and boost the level in there fixes that. But dynamic mics have a strong enough output that this isn't strictly necessary. (though as mentioned above - people have done it before)

Probably the best and simplest mod for your friends SM7, to address the problem he has, is to run it into a better mic pre, with more gain.
:-)

I've read a bunch of interesting stuff online about various mic experiments... especially on SM-57s. But haven't tried any of them yet, because I don't have many mics, and none of them I want to risk killing.... and I don't really record much involving mics (yet!) anyway... so not confident the time it'd take is worth the difference it'd make to me, yet.

if you really want to learn all about mics, there's a yahoo group called micbuilders. it's full of all sorts of amazing microphone nerds who have all sorts of fun with mic modifications, and even building them from scratch... I'm on there, but I just lurk... soaking it allllll in.

Hi there,

BTW...I went aound there today to have a look at them....Christ...you'd be hard pressed to know if they were fakes or not.
All the documentation was there (made in mexico etc) full instructions, box labels etc

I'm still trying to work out why the con job ?
It would cost somebody a bloody fortune to manufacture all this and then sell them for $100 each....
I suppose some people will go to any lengths !

I got a fake 58 ages ago, it looked exactly the same, including paperwork etc. The pencil case was wrong though, smaller and thinner than a real one (maybe a 57 case?)

The only non-audible difference: it was quite a bit lighter-weight.

I think I paid $60 or $70 including shipping for it. It actually sounds pretty good at low volumes, brighter than a 58, but breaks up and distorts when people start yelling at it.

Now my talkback mic.

Thanks for admitting the above Kurt, I got sucked into a fake 58 a while back and have been too ashamed to tell anyone....but now I'm not as embarrassed to be "outed".

I have left this thread for a while, just so I could kind of be of sound mind

first of all my apologies to everyone, my reaction was completely uncalled for and over the top.

secondly the thing I find is in my mind I know where I think it is at, I just cant express where I am heading with it, and on top of that I am an insomniac and have been for about 10 years and my reaction was after 3 days of no sleep.

to roy and everyone that read it I apologise.
