I don't think this is anything to do with copyright protection, it is simply a backdoor way to get people used to having their laptop, iPod, thumb drives, cell phones and any data device searchable by authorities under the umbrella of "protecting copyright".

So true, our rights are being eroded everyday, bit by bit and no-one does anything or gets upset cause everyone is way too tired. I think we could learn something from the Koreans, they really know how to throw a protest march.

I think as a nation we need to stand up and do the same to the authorities, bad cops and politicians deserve 5 times the punishment because they are sworn to serve us and be honest, they should be monitored, the technology is there.

All they do is keep kicking our arses and the majority of the community do nothing wrong, while the corrupt in power laugh all the way to thier Swiss bank accounts.

I wish my debit card had a chip in it. It makes them much harder to copy.

As it was, when I was in london earlier this year. my debit (not credit!) card got cloned somehow... and some dirty stinking piece of human garbage stole about $2k out of my account... anyway.. I got the money back from my bank, so it worked out not too bad in the end, after the massive inconvenience of a few months of being down about $2000.

I wish my debit card had a chip in it. It makes them much harder to copy.

Thats' what i worry about....sure they may become harder to copy, but at the end of the day....what are these chips really for?...it might just be me, but it seems bleedingly obvious that these are used as devices to soften the public for far more serious implementations of such technologies.

Hence the need to preserve the functioning of checks and balances that do exist in our political system. In this regard we are better off than the US.
To my mind the supposedly independent media has not been up to task in recent years by failing to provide informed debate on the erosion of civil liberties that has been justified by the over stated "Terrorist threat". Add to this the former Howard Govt's over eagerness to please the Republican / Neo Con agenda, particularly the invasion of Iraq. The Howard govt stacked the ministry and party power positions with like minded conservatives, and alienated moderates, often referred to as Wet Liberals within the party. This angered many Liberals inc Malcom Frazer.

I dunno. credit and debit card fraud is huge now. The amount of money involved is mind boggling. And I don't think that chucking a simple secret & encryption chip on a card does anything that credt card companies can't do already. think about it... all transactions already go back to central systems whenever you do anything. All the info is there already. I'm sure there's also some basic flash memory on these cards too, but no way will it be a large amount. And I doubt it's even used... it'll have been put there cause it could be put there for free.

That's my reason for wanting security chips on my cards - I don't see how a chip on a card is even necessary for governments or corporations to gather and use all the info they want on us, anyway. Thats why the Australia card was never pushed through. networked computer technology has become so widespread and searching has become so powerful that the reason we haven't had this forced on us, is government and corporations don't need it anymore.

At the end of the day banks don't care about any of us. but they care about our (their) money. anything that stops them having to waste their money on things like chasing up frauds is very good to the banks.



All that said, I happen to think the copyright files check is a MASSIVE infringement on people's rights to have their personal property (whatever info they keep on their computers) safe without significant and severe concerns about and evidence of wrongdoing. The whole idea that everyone is a suspect, and everyone should be tested. It goes way past what a personal ID card could ever do, and I'd love to know how to best protest it.

It's just like that arse in a uniform who did a residue test on me in melbourne airport on sunday night. there was nothing about me to suggest I was up to anything except going home, but he got to have me open my bag and wave some stupid stick about inside it, and on my coat, to check for explosives. Then stick it in a machine that blinks away for 15 seconds, and tells him what I could have said in a fraction of the time.... now THAT is utter bullshit. .....Especially seeing how Qantas planes seem to have started blowing up by themselves now, anyway.

Everytime we want something the whole country should go on strike for a day as protest, each day would cost hundreds of millions, which they don't spend on us anyway.

Surpluses are another real problem, it's our money they withold from us, what are they saving it for? We need more hospitals, schools, better roads.

So if you're a pyrotech and they wave that wand over you you're screwed, never to be seen again. One day in the grog shop a customer came in and he smelt strongly of gunpowder and I said farout mate have been playing with fireworks, just out of interest, he says "yeah I'm a a pyrotechnician for Howard & sons" cool job I thought.

So yeah you'd probably be on the ground in a straight jacket in 3 seconds, if you tried to board a plane after work.

someone was telling me and I tend to believe them, the Chinese government reads every single email that goes out of china, so all the journalists sending emails covering the games cannot say anything about tibet or about Chinese government.....

when the torch was doing the relay thing around the world there was a couple of events that got canceled because of protestors. they had stock footage to show on the news in china........

now I am not trying to be political and I genrally try and stay away from that, but I kinda like to believe we have rights and very quickly the world we are living in is getting paranoid. and I dont see anyway to stop the paranoia.

and the thing that scares me is, every generation has always talked about the good old days, in 30 years I can see this being the good old days. I just dont know what to expect.....

China the only place in the world you can buy brand new socks with holes already in them, happened to me the other day with a pack of socks from China. Chinese made shoes only go uo to size 10.5, have a look in Raben footwear, then also if you can find someone in the shop with a grasp of our language, makes buying shoes very difficult.

Anyway if they build thier nuclear facilities in the same way they build audio gear and socks then China will be just like Chernobyl in the near future.

I saw Soylent Green the first time the other day.

I just got an app the other day "Shazam" that is able to tell what Music is playing after hearing a 12 second audio sample. Note that I said hearing, you just point the mic at it, and it goes to the net, and gives you the name of the track, and also the album artwork. Pretty cool, I was really impressed when it correctly picked the name of some pretty obscure tracks, from AM radio, Vinyl, and last night in a noisy pub.

What did scare me though, is the thought the this technology if not here already, can't be far away, for use on voice. That is your voice is picked up on a Mic somewhere, and instantly who your are can be determined.

That combined with the built-in GPS and location technology that is scary, is somewhat alarming.

I used to think, "Hey, I'm not a terrorist, why do I care if the Government knows everything about me?"
After a bit of reading, and watching, now I'm not so sure.

It's not just Government you have to worry about I'd be more concerned about big business.

AT&T...the communications supergiant...was discovered apparently to be housing several supercomputers intercepting data of that nature...the only part im not sure it did was voice recognition....but hey....i reckon all the tech is here already...look at the new melodyne, i dont need to say anymore :P
