Spdif portable recorder

Hi All,

I am still tooling up for my 'holiday' overseas at the end of the year where I am hoping to get in a few hours of recording on the run. My aim is to have a very small discrete rig for doing sound scape recordings; I work in theatre a lot and am adding to my SFX collections. I will also have a few more obvious bits of kit (shot gun mic etc) for doing spot records, but will mainly be using small DPA's that no one should really notice.

I have got my mic setup sorted and even found a battery powered pre-amp and AD convertor that I am planning to run to....something. The AD spits out SPDIF on coaxial and optical but has no analogue outs (kind of the point). I bought it for this trip but also because I can run it straight in to my Mac book for doing on the fly jobs at work when there is no power or as often the case no clean power.

I have an M-audio micro tracker but the battery on it sucks (not to mention the inputs). Also it uses compact flash cards which seem a bit small storage wise these days. So I am looking at a way of recording a SPDIF signal with out breaking the bank.

I found a (don't laugh too hard) iRiver h100 series that has an optical in and appears to be ok on paper but I haven't had any luck finding a physical unit to try, I think they a discontinued.

So my question is what is out there that people know of and have tried. All I need it to do is have a coaxial or optical SPDIF in that can record at 16/44.1 wav or better and a headphone out to listen to the recorded data playing back, I can listen to the pre/AD to hear during recording.

I am hoping there a few others out there who have tried similar things that I can learn from. Any suggestion would be great, that said I don't really want (read: Can't afford/justify) a nagra or similar beasty.

there's the poor mans Nagra...The Sound Devices 702...1-2 K...not sure if thats within budget.
