Drawing the Line

Well I guess every other Pro Audio forum has a disscussion on it .

Metallica's Death Magnetic.

Ted Jensen apparently isn't listed on the credits for this and seems to be wiping his hands of all responcibility. I guess he's already cashed the check though.

So at what point would you refuse to put your name to something. They say all publicity is good but I feel some reputations on the line here. Bob Rock copped a canning on the last album and the repurcussions may be worse in this new album.

Would be curious who my shy away from involvment in the next Metallica release.

lol...Death Magnetic...

Hetfield got autotuned like Rihanna..... the whole album sounds like the producer told a computer to spit out something that sounded like metallica.

never did i think i'd see the day....he sounds like the biggest p*ssy on that album...as if the producer told him to tone down his gruffness, coz Autotune couldnt handle it...

talk about quitting while they were ahead, have u ever seen a band holding on so long??

I like the songs, hate the production,

If they are already brickwalled why didnt it get sent back?

I couldnt find the mastering engineers name, my take on it is someone doesnt know how to use an L2, or it got sent to "turkey head" ahh its not a published magazine so I will say it @#$% head mastering.

least the snare drum is sitting in a good place in the mix this time. compared to their last album.

I just want to know how it could get through all that without someone saying hey this is clipped fix it.

i have NEVER seen anything like that...(i dont look at retarded masters regularly though)...

shit like this makes me feel as helpless as when i see George Bush, and wonder how the world got dumb enough to get to this place...

oh well, at least metallica didnt do this to their old masters...hehehe..maybe i'd start caring then....

I love how the leaked version of the album is less crushed than the retail CD.

it looks like they WANT their fans to go the illegal DL route now.

I can't imagine how a band as big as Metallica with all their experience could allow this to happen! Maybe they just don't care anymore. I was a big fan of they're older stuff particularly Master Of Puppets and Kill 'Em All. I actually got Kill 'Em All on record for Father's day! But yeah it's definitely a bad thing to have a whole petition saying the production sucks! Unbelievable!

A mate of mine said he heard the guitar hero version and said it sounded great, I think maybe the idea is if you're going to spend $150 on a I think uncracked game, (I dunno can you crack these games?) you can have the good quality masters. Guitar hero is probably gonna pay them more than anyone else.

That said, farout why are people so terrified of dropping a few db on thier mixdowns. The latest Iron Maiden record supposedly was'nt even mastered and it's still crushed to death, the bass had no bottom end, was all clicky shite.

I'm over listening to "broken records" which is what all these new albums have been of late.

It's like getting a nice fresh painted artwork, blasting it with a shotgun and still trying to call it art.

So true, though I know why, everyone was too busy watching reality tv shows to care about the real world. Glad I'm immune to that crap.

again, if the music was any good, i'd care....but its fkn garbage...these old dinosaurs can crush their mixes, then sell the public remasters of their old shit till theyre blue in the face, and i still wont give them a cent. At least the artists I like still have half a brain left, ears that work, and integrity!

plus, the shittier all this mega million dollar platinum stuff sounds, the better my stuff sounds....so...keep crushing guys :P

Just thought I'd share this from over at Melband.

[quote="Ermz"]Written by a member on the Sneap forums:

[quote]MASTERED BY MUPPETS

End of session day, Rubin works away:
I'm your source of song-destruction
Tunes that hurt you ear, poor sound engineer
Leaving spikes on my instruction
Trust me you will see
Volume’s all you need
Dedicated to
How I'll limit you

Compressing faster
Limit your Master
Your albums sell faster
With a loud Master
Master

Mastered by muppets, brickwalling your dreams
Clipping, distorting and smashing extremes
Ruined by me, you can't hear a thing…
Just spiking snares, and auto-tuned screams
Mastered
Mastered
Rubin’s my name, and I'll hear you scream
Bastard
Bastard

Need to mix this way, never you dismay

Somebody has done an edited version of the album, where they stripped out all the repeated choruses etc. Apparently the songs are much better for it.
I'm hanging for the edited GH III version, maybe it'll sound like the album it should have been...

The Mastered by muppets lyrics are gold!

I think I'll draw the line at calling Ted Jensen a Muppet.

Any "Mastering" engineer that creates a master with inter-sample peaks over 0dBFS deserves to be called a muppet. Death Magnetic is chock full of those little goodies.

There goes Ludwig, Big Bass, Grundman and dare I say a few others then if that's the criteria for being a muppet.

not that i advocate this kinda stuff...

but ..clipped masters sound pretty good coming out of 2 cm TV "speakers"

more on point however...there are a million factors amounting to why this sort of crap happens...and i dont think its the mastering engineer's fault. ME's get paid to provide a service, and the customer is always right....even if they are deaf accountants...

plus, ted jensen, ludwig, add any big name here have such a wide roster of work done ...sure some clipped but others....probably as amazing as one could hope for...so it doesnt really make sense to call em muppets or the like. we know that they have good ears, and listen to great work they have all done, when not ordered around by morons.

my 2c.
