Howdy y,all.

to be perfectly honest I do not have great wadds of cash lying around either in the bank or in my house.

but I would like to own some of the classic comps and mic pres eg. 670,la2a, etc,etc.

now I'm not handy with electronics like most of you guys here.

I was wondering if anyone knows of someone or somewhere that does clones and sells them complete, or is it not worth it for whatever reason?

The problem is that a lot of the clones are reversed engineered from the originals, so there are both legal and moral issues with commercialising them. The Gyraf clones (Pultec, SSL, 1176), for example, are in this category. You simply cannot buy the assembled product.

The thing to do would be to purchase the kits yourself and have someone build them, or commission someone to do it from scratch from a publicly available schematic.

The Gyraf SSL 4000 compressor, for example, is about $400 in parts to build. Even if you paid someone a few hundred dollars to make it for you, you'd still be ahead of the $2k - $3k for the "real thing". Rob in Adelaide, is this in your line?

my gssl came out at about $180 in parts.

my 1176'2 come out at about $170 in parts per channel assuming dual mono, cheap VU and input trannie only.

the joe meek rip-off opto's i've just finished came in at about $150 per channel but have proven to be a real headache to build.

i recommend you look into building the gssl or the 1176 yourself. come on - it's easy.

yeah this is what i can do.

if you sourced the kit, pcb and any hard to get ICs ( such as the THAT VCA ) i could build it for you and supply all the common bits and case etc.
