Hi there,

Persuant to my last post, I need to track to Tools and Tape at the same time.

Is there a bantam plug that has 2 female inputs to the male bantam ??(like a dual headphone plug)
and if not, can anyone hire me a 16 channel splitter for Jan 12 th ??

Hi,

If you want to record to tape and tools just half-normal your patchbay connections. ie have the inputs to the tape machine half-normalled, and patch in your tape machine. I do it sometimes but getting levels optimised is a real challenge.

As for gobos, just find some single mattresses! Cover them with a nice coloured fitted sheet and voila. Proper gobos will be difficult to find and even more difficult to move.

Everything is normalled into the patchbay of my Soundcraft TS 12.

Should I buy a separate patchbay for the tape machine(rca) ??
Not really sure how to send to the tape machine and the tape outs (to tools)
at the same time. Any ideas ?

Does your tape machine have pass-through connections? eg my HDD recorder mirrors the inputs->outputs when recording.

No...its a very old school Ta@#$% 85/16 !
16 rca in 16 out only.
Can't work out the best way to do this....that is why i was thinking a splitter would be
the solution.
Once the client hears the result off the tape he may want just to track to Tools !
Otherwise i could do what Brad McGowan does...

As long as you record everything at once, or the tape tracks first, you don't need to worry about the latency introduced by the tape machine do you?

Would y-cables be too ghetto?

OK forget splitter cables. Waay too much trouble in my book.

Your tape machine should be able to monitor input, meaning that it should be able to relay the input signal directly. I don't think a machine like that has separate play and sync heads so it would have to do this. So connect the outputs of your tape machine to the inputs of your DAW and record away. Just make sure the tape machine is set to input.

The problem with this however is that the signal would be going through the tape machine's electronics, which I would guess wouldn't be that fantastic. Luckily if it's RCA connectors then it won't be electronically debalancing, then rebalancing on output like other Ta@#$% stuff.

As I said (probably not very well) is that you need a half-normalled patchbay. What you do is have the tape machine inputs normalled via the patchbay. You then use patch leads to split the signal (half-normalled) and the patchbay cables feed to the DAW inputs. I actually have a spare patchbay but you would need DB25 connectors to your DAW and tape machine.

I've also seen Ta@#$% patchbays with splitters inbuilt, I had some of these but stupidly cut the split so I could use the patchbay for something else.
