hi all, hoping this might be top of the head stuff for some of you out there....

so the mackie 8 bus is discontinued, the be!@#$%^& 24channel thingo not ideal, what else is out there to put in front of a 24 input DAW?

this is more for a teaching situation than for commercial stuff so its more about having a desk to be 'hands on' with and good headphone routing, aux sends for hardware FX etc than anything else

budget of a few grand, doesn't need to be anything spectacular, love to hear any ideas you may have!

Yamaha mg series? I think they have direct outs on all channels and other handy stuff. The old blue be!@#$%^& desks were better than the newer ones. be!@#$%^& mx9000 was a rip of of the Mackie 8 bus. An old Mackie SR.24, no direct outs though. (Anyone know if they can be modded to add direct out? That'd be excellent for me!) New Mackie Onyx (firewire option too!) A&H Mixwizard too dear?

Some of the soundraft,soundtracs, allen and heath etc desks as well. Some are more live types so some of the auxes are pre fader which is cool for headphone sends.
Lots of stuff comes up on ebay, although if they are older might have a few problems. Are you any good a soldering or you might need to keep a little buffer to get stuff fixed.

On the Mackie SR 24 you can use the inserts for direct outs. Just push the plug in as far as the first click so it does not cut off the signal to the channel strip.

If you used a ts lead could you push it into the insert fully? Would that short the send straight to the return? Half pushed in trs wasn't very reliable when I tried it.

Obviosly it's not the ideal but in non critical situations it works fine for me... as for pushing a ts all the way in...? try it and see or rather hear.

I would suggest a Midas Venice series desk. Comes in 16/24/32 channel configs. Great little desk.

Probably a bit out of the "few grand" budget aren't they?

yeah I was thinking the same. Try looking around for a used Yamaha 01V96.......very usable recording mixer, doubles up as a HUI with 16 faders per page.

Awaves have the Ta@#$% DM-3200 for $4000.

I've never used one, but it doesn't look like a half bad buy for that kind of money.

what about the Toft ATB?

Marty, does it have to be analog? Hasn't Rod got a D8B up there somewhere?

Thought of that, would help 2 lots of people out but i dont think they'll go for a complicated digital rig... few bits of other gear that might work well in there though

Final word on The budget is that we've got $3000 to play with, for 24 channels or near that and a good master and monitor section....

still open to hearing any other ideas while i continue my search!

I've got a Ta@#$% M3500 for $3K. 32 channel inline (64 at mixdown), full meter bridge switchable between input/aux/groups,8 buss, 6 aux sends, four fx returns, great master/studio/control room section. Hugely flexible and great sounding desk..It's not too big either. Original Ta@#$% PSU and manuals maintenance and operational (reprint).
